Nineteenth Sunday After Pentecost/Feast of St. Michael & All Angels - September 29, 2013
|
Collect of the Day (for Feast of St. Michael & All Angels 9/30)
Everlasting God, you have ordained and constituted in a wonderful order the ministries of angels and mortals: Mercifully grant that, as your holy angels always serve and worship you in heaven, so by your appointment they may help and defend us here on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Engrafted to neighbors
You, then, are my workers.
You have come from me, the supreme eternal gardener, and I have engrafted you onto the vine by making myself one with you.
Keep in mind that each of you has your own vineyard.
But everyone is joined to the neighbors' vineyards without any dividing lines.
They are so joined together, in fact, that you cannot do good or evil for yourself without doing the same for your neighbors.
Catherine of Siena 1347-1380 Dialogue, The Vines That Are Tended by the Divine Gardener (quoted from Mystics Visionaries and Prophets, Shawn Madigan, CSJ, editor)

NAME TAGS PLEASE!
We know that you know your name -- and probably the names of the people immediately around you -- but not everyone else does. Wearing name tags is part of what it means to be a hospitable community -- even if you are on the vestry or you have been here since the beginning of time.... PLEASE...take part in this opportunity to let people know who you are on a weekly basis.

FEAST OF ST. FRANCIS
Next Sunday we celebrate the Feast of St. Francis, and we invite you to bring your pet(s), for a special blessing at any of the services. Don't have a pet? Bring your favorite stuffed beast, or a picture of a stay-at-home or deceased pet to be blessed. After the 9:30am service, children, adults, and their multi-legged friends are invited to join our joyous parade through Nyack - afterwards, we'll for an outdoor activity and the Junior Youth Group will have special pet-centric activities to help raise funds for the Hi-Tor Animal Shelter.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27: ANNUAL PARISH HIKE
Plan to bring the whole family - even sociable canines - for our 47th annual parish hike, led by Win & Tom Perry. We'll meet at 2:00pm at the barn at St. John's-in-the-Wilderness, take a short drive to a trailhead, and enjoy an easy walk through the woods of HarrimanPark. We'll return to the cozy barn for a potluck supper in front of the big stone fireplace -- this year we'll even have running water and working facilities. Plan to bring something to share for supper. Directions to St. John's will soon be available in narthex. If you have questions, call Win at 845-358-0552.

FIRST AT FOUR
We're excited to continue our monthly services of Choral Evensong this season.
On the first Sunday of the month at 4:00pm the Grace Choir leads the traditional Anglican service of sung evening prayer with hymns, canticles, and anthems. Rooted in the monastic tradition, Evensong is a unique offering of the Episcopal Church. Across the world, people revel in the service's simplicity, beauty, and stillness at the close of the day. Please join the choir and clergy of Grace Church starting on October 6 at 4:00pm for
First at Four.

THE COFFEE CONNECTION
Our coffee hour ministry of hospitality is where we welcome guests & newcomers, catch up with old friends, and strengthen the bonds of community that make Grace Church so special. Coffee hour between the 9:30 and 11:00am services is already generously handled by families of the church school, but this year - when we hope to welcome many new families - we want to make doubly sure that coffee hour following the 11:00am service is equally abundant in both food and fellowship. With your help, we'd like to establish a corps of helpers who will host coffee hours on a rotating basis. No need to come early or make coffee - just bring some simple and tasty treats, and be the welcoming hand of Grace as parishioners and guests come in for coffee. "Lifetimer" or relative newcomer, you're bound to find the experience is a great way to share your love of Grace Church. If you'd like to know more, or to sign up for a Sunday, please contact the office: 845-358-1297, parishoffice@gracechurchnyack.org or look for the sign up sheet available at coffee hours.

In those years, people will say, we lost track of the meaning of we, of you we found ourselves reduced to I and the whole thing became silly, ironic, terrible: we were trying to live a personal life and, yes, that was the only life we could bear witness to But the great dark birds of history screamed and plunged into our personal weather They were headed somewhere else but their beaks and pinions drove along the shore, through rages of fog where we stood, saying I In Those Years, by Adrienne Rich |
