Eighteenth Sunday After Pentecost - September 22, 2013
Collect of the Day

Grant us, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, while we are placed among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Reflection

I discovered later, and I'm still discovering right up to this moment, that is it only by living completely in this world that one learns to have faith. One must completely abandon any attempt to make something of oneself, whether it be a saint, or a converted sinner, or a churchman (a so-called priestly type!), a righteous man or an unrighteous one, a sick man or a healthy one. By this-worldliness I mean living unreservedly in life's duties, problems, successes and failures, experiences and perplexities. In so doing we throw ourselves completely into the arms of God, taking seriously, not our own sufferings, but those of God in the world - watching with Christ in Gethsemane. That, I think, is faith; that is metanoia; and that is how one becomes a man and a Christian (cf. Jer. 45!). How can success make us arrogant, or failure lead us astray, when we share in God's sufferings through a life of this kind?

THE COFFEE CONNECTION

Our coffee hour ministry of hospitality is where we welcome guests & newcomers, catch up with old friends, and strengthen the bonds of community that make Grace Church so special.  Coffee hour between the 9:30 and 11:00am services is already generously handled by families of the church school, but this year - when we hope to welcome many new families - we want to make doubly sure that coffee hour following the 11:00am service is equally abundant in both food and fellowship. With your help, we'd like to establish a corps of helpers who will host coffee hours on a rotating basis.  No need to come early or make coffee - just bring some simple and tasty treats, and be the welcoming hand of Grace as parishioners and guests come in for coffee. "Lifetimer" or relative newcomer, you're bound to find the experience is a great way to share your love of Grace Church.  If you'd like to know more, or to sign up for a Sunday, please contact the office: 845-358-1297, parishoffice@gracechurchnyack.org or look for the sign up sheet available at coffee hours.

Parting Thought

All I have is a voice

To undo the folded lie,

The romantic lie in the brain

Of the sensual man-in-the-street

And the lie of Authority

Whose buildings grope the sky:

There is no such thing as the State

And no one exists alone;

Hunger allows no choice

To the citizen or the police;

We must love one another or die.

W. H. Auden, excerpted from the poem "September 1, 1939"
