Eleventh Sunday of Pentecost -August 4, 2013
Collect of the Day

Let your continual mercy, O Lord, cleanse and defend your Church; and, because it cannot continue in safety without your help, protect and govern it always by your goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Reflection

"Stop trying to protect, to rescue, to judge, to manage the lives around you . . . remember that the lives of others are not your business. They are their business. They are God's business . . . even your own life is not your business. It also is God's business. Leave it to God. It is an astonishing thought. It can become a life-transforming thought . . . unclench the fists of your spirit and take it easy . . . What deadens us most to God's presence within us, I think, is the inner dialogue that we are continuously engaged in with ourselves, the endless chatter of human thought. I suspect that there is nothing more crucial to true spiritual comfort . . . than being able from time to time to stop that chatter . . . "

WE HAVE A NEW RECTOR

The Rev. Owen C. Thompson to begin his ministry here on September 15, 2013

The Grace Church vestry has called the Rev. Owen C. Thompson to be the new rector of the parish and he has accepted the call.  Fr. Owen is currently the rector of Trinity St.John's Church in Hewlett, NY (on the south shore of Long Island in Nassau County), a position he has held since 2005.  Fr. Owen earned his M.Div at General Theological Seminary, has a masters degree in educational technology from NYU and earned his undergraduate degree at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.  Fr. Owen, his wife Jonna, and their two sons (ages 6 and 3) plan to move into Babbit House the first week of September.

SMILE FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHER

As we prepare to welcome our new rector, we'd like to give him a headstart at learning names and faces.  Therefore, during the next three Sundays, another new face, Sam Monroe,  will be around taking informal pictures of individuals and families following the 8 & 10:00am services.   Although Sam, who has been hiding in the choir loft, is a photographer by avocation, the pictures are just intended to help Fr. Owen with identification, so don't worry about special clothes or bad hair days.  Just turn up and smile.

SAVE THOSE TRAVEL SIZE TOILETRIES FOR MIDNIGHT RUN

In September we'll start collecting travel-size soaps, shampoo, hair conditioner, lotion, and packaged toothbrushes & toothpaste for Midnight Run meal bags that are distributed to the homeless in New York City.

We can also use donations of sandwich baggies, napkins, and lunch bags - keep an eye out as they often go on sale once school is about to begin.  We'll have collection bins for your donations available at church in September.  In the meantime, our next Midnight Run meal preparation day is Saturday, August 10 at 10:00am in Memorial Hall - please join us!

SUMMER CHOIR NEXT WEEKEND  -  AUGUST 11

Interested in singing with the choir but are unsure of what it's all about?

Want a chance to keep your musical skills sharp during the Dog Days?
Curious about the view from the Choir Loft?

There are two remaining opportunities to sing with the Summer Choir between now and September: Next Sunday, August 11, August 25 (the second and fourth Sundays of the month). Rehearsals are the same day at
9:15am in the Choir Room.  The Summer Choir sits in the pews for the service and comes up to the organ (or over to the piano) at the offering.  It's a perfect opportunity for families & young adults to make music!  For more information, please contact Brandon Beachamp, Interim Organist & Choirmaster.

ADULT SPIRITUAL FORMATION BOOK GROUP MAKES FALL SELECTION
Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife by Eben Alexander

Meeting scheduled for Thursday, September 12 at 7:30pm.

The Adult Education and Spiritual Formation Book Group recently voted to read this fascinating memoir of a near-death experience for its first meeting in September. New members are always welcome to join this informal group.  For information or to weigh in on meeting times, please contact group leader Jennifer Hausler at jhausler@optonline.net.

SUMMERTIME AND THE LIVING IS EASY

All too easy to miss a pledge payment ....or two

Why Not Consider E-pledging?

Through the Diocese of New York, we participate in a program that makes it possible for pledge payments to be made to us automatically, via an electronic transfer from your bank account.  You determine payment schedule, and we both receive records of payments.   It's a win-win situation all around.  If you'd like information, look for brochure in the narthex, or  email us and we'd be happy to send it out to you.

PEOPLE TO PEOPLE ALWAYS NEEDS DONATIONS
With summer travel schedules kicking in, the shelves are practically bare over at People to People's food bank.  PLEASE, remember to bring your donations to church every week. Here's a link to more.
