Collect of the Day
O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.

The Gift of God's Presence Heaven is nothing we can seek through our own virtue; it cannot be earned; it is a gift of the God of love. When we are self-emptied enough to make room for this love, it is not as a result of our own moral rectitude or willpower. But it is sometimes given to us, this lovely emptiness, and then the Holy Spirit can fill it, with prayer, or music, or a poem, or a story. Or, sometimes, it goes beyond all these to the greatest gift of all, being filled with that which is beyond all symbols, with God's Presence. And then we are, far more than when we are filled with self probing, self-centeredness, or self-righteousness.

EPISCOPAL CHARITIES SUNDAY - THIS WEEK
This Sunday is Episcopal Charities Sunday. The collection occurs on Mother's Day to commemorate the work of two different 19th-century women, Anna Reeves Jarvis and Julia Ward Howe. Jarvis, a poor Appalachian mother, sought people and funds to improve sanitation for the women and families in her area in order to cut down on the incidents of childhood illnesses and early mortality. Howe formed activities urging mothers everywhere to reach across enemy combatant lines to work for peace. During the Civil War mothers on both sides of the battle worked together to ensure food availability for those in need. The May collection is for feeding programs throughout the diocese.Special offering envelopes are available in the narthex. Please give generously!

NEW NO COFFEE HOUR ON SUNDAY, MAY 12
Because there are no church school classes and the church needs to be prepared for an afternoon wedding immediately following the 11:00am service, there will no "official" coffee hour this Sunday. The small table discussion of Acts will take place in the Fenton Room, and coffee will
most likely be available (particularly if someone knowledgeable want to step up to make it!)
MAY PARISH FORUMS AND FELLOWSHIP
The time between the 9:30 and 11:00am
worship services provides an opportunity for those attending either of the services to gather for programs and conversation. The Adult Education and Spiritual Formation Commission works to provide a balance by scheduling several forums/discussions each month, as well as providing opportunities to socialize. We hope you will join us! Small table discussion of the Bible passages takes place in the Fenton Room. Commission member Charles Reynolds has prepared discussion guides for each date-copies are available by clicking on the links below.

The Senior Youth Group Rummage Sale to benefit the Church Youth Service Mission (CYSM) trip -- which this year will be to Beard's Fork, West Virginia-- will be on Sunday, May 19 from 10:00am

Mother Alon will be leading a two-session course on the Episcopal church for adults who are preparing to be confirmed or received when Bishop Smith visits on Sunday, June 9 at 5:00pm, or at the Cathedral on June 1.The classes will take place on Tuesday, May 14 and 28 at 7:00pm in the rector's office. NEW LOOKING FOR CHURCH SCHOOL TEACHERS
Grace Church School is possible thanks to our dedicated group of volunteer church school teachers. These teachers are parents, grandparents, or any other adult who enjoys working with kids. Each grade level is assigned three teachers to enable a rotation that requires teaching no more than every third week - it usually comes out to about once a month, in fact. The other day I was ricocheting slowly off the blue walls of this room, moving as if underwater from typewriter to piano, from bookshelf to an envelope lying on the floor, when I found myself in the L section of the dictionary where my eyes fell upon the word lanyard.
No cookie nibbled by a French novelist could send one into the past more suddenly- a past where I sat at a workbench at a camp by a deep Adirondack lake learning how to braid long thin plastic strips into a lanyard, a gift for my mother.
I had never seen anyone use a lanyard or wear one, if that's what you did with them, but that did not keep me from crossing strand over strand again and again until I had made a boxy red and white lanyard for my mother.
She gave me life and milk from her breasts, and I gave her a lanyard. She nursed me in many a sick room, lifted spoons of medicine to my lips, laid cold face-cloths on my forehead, and then led me out into the airy light
and taught me to walk and swim, and I, in turn, presented her with a lanyard. Here are thousands of meals, she said, and here is clothing and a good education. And here is your lanyard, I replied, which I made with a little help from a counselor.
Here is a breathing body and a beating heart, strong legs, bones and teeth, and two clear eyes to read the world, she whispered, and here, I said, is the lanyard I made at camp. And here, I wish to say to her now, is a smaller gift-not the worn truth
that you can never repay your mother, but the rueful admission that when she took the two-tone lanyard from my hand, I was as sure as a boy could be that this useless, worthless thing I wove out of boredom would be enough to make us even.
