The Third Sunday in Lent - March 3, 2013
|
Collect of the Day Almighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

By Howard Thurman
To postpone living significantly in the present is a serious blunder. Life does not stop being life because we are experiencing reverses or because we are young or because we are preparing ourselves vocationally or because certain important decisions that are in the hands of others have not been made. All of this is to give a purely quantitative character to life, to measure it exclusively in terms of the episode, the event, the circumstance. It is important to cultivate a "feeling for significance" in living and thus to give the quality of aliveness to the experience of living moment by moment. This seeks ever for fullness, keenness, and zest as the open sesame to experience life in the living of life. What is lived deeply is securely one's own and nothing can ever take it away - neither circumstance, nor age, nor even Death itself.

Parish Forum/Fellowship Time 10:10 - 10:55am
The time between the 9:30 and 11:00am worship services provides an opportunity for those attending either of the services to gather for programs and conversation. Scheduling these events to meet the needs of those who want to socialize and those who want a planned forum is a challenge, given the shortage of available spaces to meet on Sunday mornings.
In an attempt to serve both needs, the Adult Education and Spiritual Formation Commission works to provide a balance by scheduling two forums a month and providing opportunities to socialize and have an extended coffee hour on the other Sundays. We hope you will join us for one or both of these events in the time to come.
Here's the schedule for March:
Mar. 3 Forum - small table discussion of Exodus 3:7-11
Mar. 10 Forum - small table discussion of Luke 15:11b-32
Mar. 17 Easter Fair/hospitality
Mar. 24 Palm Sunday No Forum or Hospitality
Mar. 30 Easter Sunday No Forum or Hospitality

DIVERSITY WORKSHOP
The annual Grace Church Diversity Workshop for young people in grades 6 - 8 will be held on Tuesday, March 5 at 7:00pm. The program should last approximately one hour. Respecting the dignity of all human beings is a key teaching of our church and this training is an important reflection of that belief. Participants will engage in interactive exercises and discussion to explore their own biases, those in our greater society, and the impact that these have on human interactions. How we can be catalysts for change will also be addressed. The kids' discussion will be facilitated by Diane Goodman-Weinbaum, a trained and experienced educator in diversity and social justice issues. Simultaneously, parents and group leaders will be invited to join in a discussion in Patterson Hall with Greg Birchett, LCSW, parishioner, father and social worker, and other members or the diversity committee. Please note that this is a mandatory training for the Boy Scouts and the Grace Church confirmands. Members of our Junior Youth Group and Amazing Grace Circus are also encouraged to attend. Please contact our church school coordinator Lainie Murrell if you or your child plans to attend.

JOIN US ON WEDNESDAY EVENINGS IN LENT
Faithful people represent widely varied opinions on gun ownership and gun control. Sometimes we segment "what is going on in the world" from "what we talk about at church."
Many have worries and concerns about different aspects of this complicated issue. The Adult Education and Spiritual Formation Commission invites you to journey with us this Lent in addressing some of these concerns so that we can begin a faithful and rational conversation about guns.
This discussion is not intended to promote any particular agenda or plan of action, simply to start the conversation.
Our upcoming speakers:
March 6 Clarkstown Police Department school safety officer - discussing what parents and guardians need to know. March 13 TBA A light supper will be served at 6:15 pm in Memorial Hall followed by our evening program, which will include speakers and an opportunity to talk in small groups. Please email us, or call and leave a message (845-358-1297 ext. 10) if you are planning on attending the dinner so we know how many to prepare for. There is no need to RSVP if you are only coming for the program.
