The Second Sunday of Lent - February 24, 2013
O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Reflection

"How strange is the lot of us mortals! Each of us is here for a brief sojourn; for what purpose he knows not, though he sometimes thinks he senses it. But without deeper reflection one knows from daily life that one exists for other people - first of all for those upon whose smiles and well-being our own happiness is wholly dependent, and then for the many, unknown to us, to whose destinies we are bound by the ties of sympathy. A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life are based on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving,"

Albert Einstein (in "The World as I See It")

WELCOME BRUNCH AT THE RECTORY

Are you relatively new to the Grace Church community? Perhaps you've been coming for awhile but are wondering how to become more involved, or have questions about who does what, or what goes on here beyond the Sunday services. This Sunday, the New Member Ministry commission will host a welcome brunch and coffee for those who wish to find out more about Grace and meet some of the parish leadership. The informal gathering will run from10:15am to 1:00pm at the rectory (at the corner of First and Franklin, on the other side of the memorial garden) and you're welcome to stop by at anytime. We look forward to meeting you!  Please let us know if you plan to attend.

LENTEN PROGRAM CONTINUES

JOIN US ON WEDNESDAY EVENINGS IN LENT

Faithful people represent widely varied opinions on gun ownership and gun control. Sometimes we segment "what is going on in the world" from "what we talk about at church."

Many have worries and concerns about different aspects of this complicated issue. The Adult Education and Spiritual Formation Commission invites you to journey with us this Lent in addressing some of these concerns so that we can begin a faithful and rational conversation about guns.

This discussion is not intended to promote any particular agenda or plan of action, simply to start the conversation.

Our upcoming speakers:

Feb. 27                        Thomas P. Zugibe - Rockland County District Attorney speaking about New York laws and responsible gun ownership.

March 6                       Clarkstown Police Department school safety officer - discussing what parents and guardians need to know.

March 13                      TBA

A light supper will be served at 6:15 pm in Memorial Hall followed by our evening program,  which will include speakers and an opportunity to talk in small groups. Please  email us, or call and leave a message (845-358-1297 ext. 10)  if you are planning on attending the dinner so we know how many to prepare for. There is no need to RSVP if you are only coming for the program.

NEXT SUNDAY, MARCH 3 AT 4:00PM - CHORAL EVENSONG

Reminders

WEDNESDAY MORNING EUCHARIST IN BRADLEY CHAPEL

Our regular weekly Wednesday morning service has resumed.  Join us at 8:00am in Bradley Chapel for Holy Eucharist and Healing Prayers.

Parish Forum/Fellowship Time 10:10 - 10:55am

The time between the 9:30 and 11:00am worship services provides an opportunity for those attending either of the services to gather for programs and conversation.  Scheduling these events to meet the needs of those who want to socialize and those who want a planned forum is a challenge, given the shortage of available spaces to meet on Sunday mornings.

In an attempt to serve both needs, the Adult Education and Spiritual Formation Commission works to provide a balance by scheduling two forums a month and providing opportunities to socialize and have an extended coffee hour on the other Sundays.  We hope you will join us for one or both of these events in the time to come.

Here's the schedule for March:

Mar. 3     Forum - small table discussion of Exodus 3:7-11

Mar. 10   Forum - small table discussion of Luke 15:11b-32

Mar. 17   Easter Fair/hospitality

Mar. 24   Palm Sunday No Forum or Hospitality

Mar. 30   Easter Sunday No Forum or Hospitality

Parting Thought

The Time

Summer is the time to write. I tell myself this
in winter especially. Summer comes,
I want to tumble with the river
over rocks and mossy dams.

A fish drifting upside down.
Slow accordians sweeten the breeze.

The Sanitary Mattress Factory says,
"Sleep is Life."
Why do I think of forty ways to spend an afternoon?

Yesterday someone said, "It gets late so early."
I wrote it down. I was going to do something with it.
Maybe it is a title and this life is the poem.
