The First Sunday of Lent - February 17, 2013

COLLECT OF THE DAY

Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations; and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Reflection

"Once upon a time," an ancient story tells, "the master had a visitor who came to inquire about Zen. But instead of listening, the visitor kept talking about his own concerns and giving his own thoughts. After a while, the master served tea. He poured tea into his visitor's cup until it was full and then he kept on pouring. Finally the visitor could not bear it any longer. 'Don't you see that my cup is full?' he said. 'It's not possible to get anymore in.' 'Just so,' the master said, stopping at last. 'And like this cup you are filled with your own ideas. How can you expect me to give you Zen unless you first empty your cup?'"

A monastic Lent is the process of emptying our cups. Lent is the time for trimming the soul and scraping the sludge off a life turned slipshod. Lent is about taking stock of time, even religious time. Lent is about exercising the control that enables us to say no to ourselves so that when life turns hard of its own accord we have the spiritual stamina to say yes to its twists and turns with faith and hope. . . . Lent is the time to make new efforts to be what we say we want to be.

LITURGY IN LENT

During the season of Lent, you'll notice some changes. The 8:00am service will be essentially the same. At 9:30am (for Lent only), we'll begin the worship service with a simple confession but otherwise the worship will also be essentially the same. At 11:00am, this week we'll begin the service with the Great Litany sung in procession. When this occurs, both the confession and the Prayers of the People are omitted from the service. However, in subsequent weeks, we'll begin the spoken part of the worship with confession. It will then follow the customary order of a Sunday morning Eucharist.

A word about our altar set up for the season of Lent.....Prior to the development of the "new" Book of Common Prayer, the altar was located on the (liturgical) East wall of the church. For most of the Great Thanksgiving, the celebrant's back was to the congregation. With this worship style, the priest was understood to be the lead voice of the congregation, who were all lifting up their prayers to God in thanksgiving. The movement of altars away from the wall was intended to signify the community of the church gathered around the table. However, in most churches, because altars were not moved out into the midst of the congregation, what happened instead was a sense of the altar party functioning as performers whose actions were watched, and many in the congregation perceiving their role as audience.

This year, we will enter the solemnity of Lent by experiencing this more contemplative form of worship as we all face in the same direction to lift our prayers and voices to God. You are encouraged to remain standing or kneel after the Sanctus as is your custom. Once the gifts are presented, the congregation will come forward to the altar rail to receive communion as directed by the ushers.

LENTEN PROGRAM BEGINS ON WEDNESDAY

Please plan on joining the Adult Education and Spiritual Formation Commission's Lent program which will begin on Wednesday, February 20.  As in past years, we'll meet for a light supper, followed by a program.  This year, supper will begin at 6:15pm.  Watch for more information to follow soon. To help with planning our meals, please let us know if you plan to attend.
Announcements

Parish Forum/Fellowship Time 10:10 - 10:55am

The time between the 9:30 and 11:00am worship services provides an opportunity for those attending either of the services to gather for programs and conversation.  Scheduling these events to meet the needs of those who want to socialize and those who want a planned forum is a challenge, given the shortage of available spaces to meet on Sunday mornings.

In an attempt to serve both needs, the Adult Education and Spiritual Formation Commission works to provide a balance by scheduling two forums a month and providing opportunities to socialize and have an extended coffee hour on the other Sundays.  We hope you will join us for one or both of these events in the time to come.  Here's the schedule:

For February please join us for:

Feb. 17    Forum - small table discussion of Luke 4:9-12 (Patterson Hall)

Church School Community Activity: Lenten Giving Project - Gifts for Life (Memorial Hall)

Feb. 24    Church Youth Service Mission trip  (CYSM)fundraising breakfast

The Senior Youth Group will be in Memorial Hall throughout the morning (8:45am -12:30pm), serving up a hearty breakfast for a suggested donation of $5/person. A variety of fair trade items will also be available for purchase. Proceeds all go to benefit this year's Church Youth Service Mission Trip to Beard's Fork, West Virginia

Looking ahead to March:

Parting Thought

Desert Places

by Robert Frost

Snow falling and night falling fast, oh, fast
In a field I looked into going past,
And the ground almost covered smooth in snow,
But a few weeds and stubble showing last.

The woods around it have it - it is theirs.
All animals are smothered in their lairs,
I am too absent-spirited to count;
The loneliness includes me unawares.

And lonely as it is, that loneliness
Will be more lonely ere it will be less -
A blanker whiteness of benighted snow
With no expression, nothing to express.

They cannot scare me with their empty spaces
Between stars - on stars where no human race is.
I have it in me so much nearer home
To scare myself with my own desert places.
