REFLECTION

Benedictine spirituality is intent on our realizing that the presence of the other is also essential to my own development as well. Community is a Benedictine value. Do we need it now? We exist to be miracle workers for one another, and it is in community that we are called to grow. It's in community that we come to see God in the other. It's in community that we see our own emptiness filled up by the other. It's community that calls me beyond the pinched horizons of my own life, my own country, my own race, and gives me the gifts I do not of myself have within me. ...

A Benedictine spirituality of community calls for more than togetherness. Togetherness is very cheap community. Benedictine community calls for the open mind and the open heart. Benedict called always for minds opened to the shattering implications of the Scriptures. The fact is that Jesus was an assault on every closed mind in Israel. To those who thought that illness was a punishment for sin, Jesus called for openness. To those who considered tax collectors incapable of salvation, Jesus called for openness. To those who believed that the Messiah, to be real, had to be a military figure, Jesus was the nonviolent call to openness.

And so Benedict also calls us to open-heartedness. The Benedictine heart, the heart that saved Europe before us, is a place without boundaries. [It is] a place where the truth of the oneness of the human community shatters all barriers, opens all doors, refuses all prejudices, welcomes all strangers, listens to all voices, black and white, Arab and Jew, male and female. The data are in. The world is an electronic, commercial, political village. We cannot, you and I, go on much longer simply nodding to the neighbors in the parking lot after church, in the name of hospitality and community. We must begin to see the immorality of being socially, globally, unconscious. Socially, globally, narcissistic, and calling it the free market, democracy, and unipolarism. Individualism has not saved us. We need the wisdom of community now.

INTERFAITH EVENT AT GRACE - THIS SUNDAY, October 14 at 4:00pm

The clergy, musicians and worship ministers of Grace will host an evensong service on Sunday, October 14, at 4:00pm.   This is the second of a series of interfaith events designed for Christians, Jews and Muslims to come together in community to learn about our different faith and practices.

All three Abrahamic faiths have in common the marking of time with occasions of prayer throughout the course of the day. Evensong (or vespers) is a worship service in the Anglican tradition. Through song, psalmody, readings from scripture and prayers, it is the work of the community gathered together at day's end for the formal lighting of candles and reflection back on the previous day.

Throughout the service, there will be opportunities for silent reflection, prayers, and the singing of psalms and hymns. Worshippers are welcome to participate at whatever level they find comfortable. Our time together will begin with a brief lecture and introduction to our worship service and will conclude with an opportunity to comment and ask questions.   We will end with a reception and opportunity to meet with each other more informally.

PALISADES OPERA RETURNS WITH THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO On Friday, October 19 at 7:00pm the Palisades Opera returns to perform Mozart's Marriage of Figaro, sung in Italian with English dialogue. The company features opera singers from the Rockland/Bergen area, with Amy Duran on the piano. Tickets are $20 for adults/$18 for students and seniors. For more information, go to palisadesopera.org, or call 203-815-2478. The performance will be repeated at Grace Church in Westwood, NJ on Sunday the 21st at 3:00pm.
ANNUAL PARISH HIKE - Sunday, October 28 We had one of our biggest turnouts ever last year for the hike. This year the annual Parish Hike will take place on Sunday afternoon, October 28. We will meet at 2:00pm at the barn at St. John's-in-the-Wilderness, take a short drive to a trailhead, and enjoy an easy walk through the autumn woods of Harriman Park. We'll then return to the cozy barn for a potluck supper in front of the big stone fireplace. Besides fall colors, we may see native American rock shelters, signs of Revolutionary War history, old iron mines, streams and ponds, and interesting wildlife. This is Win Perry's 47th year as leader! While walking and talking, you will get to know another side of your fellow parishioners. Great for the entire family! Plan to bring something to share for supper. If you have questions, call Win at 358-0552

PARTING THOUGHT

A Request
by Ursula Le Guin

Should my tongue be tied by stroke
listen to me as if I spoke

and said to you, "My dear, my friend,
stay here a while and take my hand;

my voice is hindered by this clot,
but silence says what I cannot,

and you can answer as you please
such undemanding words as these.

Or let our conversation be
a mute and patient amity,

sitting, all the words bygone,
like a stone beside a stone.

It takes a while to learn to talk
the long language of the rock."
