FEATURE ARTICLE
The Owner is the Client...
The Ultimate Caregiver Challenge
By Regina McNamara, RN, MSN, MPH, Owner

My siblings occasionally remark that I built a senior care company so that I would have someone to care for ME. I never considered our service to be something I would ever actually use.

Until I needed a new knee....

No one's perfect and my right knee was never quite right.  A bit misaligned, causing occasional gait problems.  But nothing serious.  However, decades of wear and tear, beginning with cheer leading injuries and progressing to hiking, race-walking, and general misuse of the joint led to clients, friends and family suggesting a new knee.

I figured how hard could this be?  I have watched our caregivers assist clients with joint replacements, having returned from rehab and they did wonderfully.  And they were all older than I.

Mabel Gonzalez: It is a myth that
any successful company owes its
achievements to just one person.
At Always There, we have always been a team.  Our caregivers, our
oversight folks in the field and our
office support folks all work together
to meet the needs of clients and
caregivers on a daily basis.

Rarely has this been more challenging than during
the recent absence of Regina, the company owner.
Usually a hands on manager, Regina had her days
full with the help of our support people.

However her recent surgery and need to spend time
on recovery limits her ability for leadership tasks.

 Long Term Care Insurance -
 Monthly Feature
Costs of Care
are Increasing Annually.  Buyer Beware!

By: Beata Everett, Long Term Care Insurance Specialist

There are two results that show up repeatedly when studies are conducted about long-term care.

The first is that Americans do not know how expensive long-term care (LTC) services can be. The second is Americans do not realize the high frequency of requiring LTC services. And sadly, even very well educated people assume that many of these costs are borne by the government.  That is clearly not the case.  Medicaid can subsidize impoverished elderly, but plans vary by state and funding is subject to state budgets. Medicare covers only acute short term skilled care in nursing homes post hospital stay or skilled services at home for a brief period.  Again these services are also being affected by federal budget reductions to fund other programs. The cost of care varies greatly throughout the country so it is important to consider the area in which you plan to live in your later years when you may require long term care at home or in a facility.

 Alan Weiss on Why have
 we become so polarized?

I pointed out to a woman on Facebook-someone who had asked to befriend me-that there were some distinguished scientists who though global warming and climate change was not as severe a threat as some of their colleagues were positing. That's all I said, I didn't take a position, and that statement is an objective fact.

"Oh," she replied, "then I see you're a 'denier'."
Yikes! (What I became was actually someone who immediately unfriended her.) More than ever, it seems, you're either "for me or against me." That has some negative consequences, not the least of which is a complete loss of dialogue and opportunity to learn.

One of the best ways to counteract this is through the use

Providers We Love
We are privileged to have received referrals from and be
able to coordinate care with many Assisted Living facilities,
rehab facilities, and Medicare Home Care and Hospice
agencies. Our growth is in large part due to the trust the
staff in these organizations have put in our caregivers.
We are likewise impressed with them and we are committed
to referring to them on a regular basis

Gentiva Home Health Care Services, Stratford, Old Saybrook, Hamden, Farmington.

Gentiva is a large national Medicare certified home health company. Their services include. Skilled nursing, physical therapy, occupational and speech language therapy wound care, disease and pain management, medication management and education. They maintain a special expertise in dementia care.

Most of these services can be found in any certified agency. And there are several hundred such agencies in CT.

But Gentiva distinguishes itself in countless ways:

Professionalism. All clinicians are connected electronically so that all their notes, information and observations documented on ipads in the patient's home are instantly transferred to all team members.

Continuity of care. The patient benefits enormously when their nurse or therapist is the same each visit. Relationships are established and progress is made much more efficiently. This is a challenge for most home health agencies and few ever reach this "optimum level of continuity". Gentiva meets this standard 100% of the time.
