Featured Article: Those People

By Tom & Karen Brenner, Alzheimer's Reading Room

We were working in a memory support center one day when we noticed two women crying at a table. We went over to them to ask if there was something we could to do to help.

We looked over to the table where the woman was pointing and saw a table of people who were working on one of the exercises that we brought into the center.

We invited the visitors to come with us and join the table of those people.

They declined, saying that they felt nervous around those people and that they would just drive the fifty miles back home. We encouraged them to just come and see what was going on before they left. Anyway, didn't they want to say good bye to their good friend?

leaf KITCHEN SAFETY TIPS FOR SENIORS AND THEIR CAREGIVERS

You may have heard the expression "a watched pot never boils," but what if you don't want it boiling over while your mother is cooking? Like they say, "there's an app for that" only here we are talking about some interesting applications.

You know that your aging parents want to remain in their familiar home, but you are worried about all the things that can go wrong, like the pot boiling over or other kitchen disasters. Even with a caregiver in the home part of the day, you worry. to Heal at the End of Life

What people really want at Life's end

Stanford University palliative care expert, Dr. Vyjeyanthi "V.J." Periyakoil believes most patients don't simply want every medical intervention that may or may not prolong their lives. Rather people want appropriate care sensitive to their quality of life and, enabling them to experience their final days as fully as possible with minimal stress for their families.

In fact, a 2012 report by the California Health Care Foundation affirmed Periyakoil's understanding of what patients hope for.
  1. People do not want their families burdened by the cost of their care
  2. They do not want to struggle with troubling decisions about their treatment.

Lovelace Ohene Agyekum Lovelace had just finished a case when I asked her if she had ever been to Maine.  She gave me one of her famous huge smiles, jumped up and down in sheer joy.  "MAINE!  I'm going to Maine??  Never been there." She then met her new client AG and it was love at first sight!  By July they were off to Maine to Ann's family's beautiful old summer house.  With the sea a short walk away, the beautiful gardens and mountains nearby, she and her client had a truly wonderful summer, seeing the sights, eating lots of lobster, enjoying tines with AG's wonderful family.  Read More About Lovelace
