WOW
W - Where did this year go?
In October, the school year stretches out in front of us on the calendar with a multitude of activities, assignments, responsibilities, things to do, places to go - and then, BAM - it is Memorial Day weekend. Here is a little known fact about me - from 2003 through 2007, I spent Memorial Day weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway working for NASCAR. I was a "stubber." That is the person who greeted you with a smile, took your ticket, tore off the stub, and gave you back the pretty part as a souvenir. When a number of tickets started showing up as forgeries, the Speedway turned to scanners to read tickets - and then I got the job of checking the coolers for glass - not so much fun for me, so I turned to other projects for Memorial Day.
But those races were fun and I met a ton of interesting folks.
O - Over as in "It's all over but the shoutin'!" For the Scholars' Academy, that means Talent Show, yearbooks, Field Days, Awards and Graduation,
and end-of-year parties. We do know how to end the school year!
W - Wonderful! Enough said.
IMPORTANT - FINAL REPORT CARDS
AVAILABLE TUESDAY, JUNE 19, 9:00 A.M.
We regret the calendar error that indicates report cards will be available June 15. During a regular grading period, we have used a full week to get report cards ready for distribution. With all of the reports that are included in the final report card, we will be unable to get them ready for distribution in less than a full week from the teacher workday, June 11. So, report cards will be available Tuesday, June 19 beginning at 9:00 a.m.
If you wish to have your child's report card mailed, please SEND A DOLLAR ($1.00) in cash to school before the final day of attendance. Report cards may be picked up at the school office between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. beginning June 19. Please do not come to the school at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, June 18 requesting the report card. Families who have outstanding charges for before or aftercare or students with lost books will not be given a report card until all charges are cleared. Parents should pick up any unused medications from the school office on the last attendance day. Any medications left during the summer will be disposed of.
For the earth,
Marie Peine, Ph.D., Director

Help Make Field Days a Success
It is nearing the end of the year, which means it's time to start thinking about Field Day!
![](https://imgssl.constantcontact.com/ui/stock1/play_header.jpg)
Field Day dates are:
June 4th (upper grades 5-8)
and
June 5th (lower grades K-4)
from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
The location of both Field Days is:
Park Road Park
6220 Park Road
#4 Ballfield
When entering the first entrance to the park,
the #4 ballfield is the field in front of you as you come down the road.
All children taking part in field day on Monday or Tuesday should be dropped off at the fields at 8:15 a.m. by parents or carpools. All before-care children will be transported to the fields at 8:15 a.m. by bus. All children will be transported back to school at the conclusion of field day where they will then eat lunch.
Field Day was a HUGE success last year thanks to Mrs. Z's fun-filled activities, our wonderful volunteers and the generous donations of water and treats. We are still in need of water, popsicles (lower grades), canopies, coolers, ice, and of course: STATION HELPERS. Please click the link below to sign up for any of the above items and/or to volunteer to run a station.
Please note: There are two sign-up sheets: one for upper grade field day and one for lower grade field day. If you want to bring an item for both days, please sign up on BOTH sheets!

Summer Reading Program
Summer is coming up soon and the public library is excited about our Summer Reading program. This year the theme is Dream Big - READ!
Summer Reading goes from June 12 to August 10.
![](https://imgssl.constantcontact.com/ui/stock1/young-girl-studying.jpg) Children ages 5 to 11 can get prizes for reading! (Children 4 and under will participate in the "Wee Read" program, and those 12 and older can be in the "Own the Night" program). This year the kids can sign up online to record the amount of time they read. Kids can get prizes for reading: a glow-in-the-dark band for 10 hours of reading and a free book at 20 hours. Kids can also read 5 additional hours to donate a Book Buck, which will make books available to loc al centers in need. Click here to go to the library's Summer Reading website, where you can find out more and register. (Kids can start signing up now but cannot record their reading time until June 12). Contact your local library branch or call Carl Schwanke at 704-416-5800 if you have any questions. Carl Schwanke Senior Library Assistant Myers Park Library

Bravo, Scholars!
On May 12, Kaelan Amin (5th grade) successfully tested for and achieved the rank of 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Kaelan was first introduced to the martial arts at Scholars' Academy during his kindergarten year when it was offered as an enrichment class. Kaelan has continued his training under Grand Master Keum Son Kim, former world champion and five-time Korean national champion. Kaelan will serve as an instructor in Grand Master Kim's Academy this summer.
Congratulations Kaelan!
Graduating 8th grader Emma Barnes has been selected to attend the Star Talk Chinese Summer Program at Queens University this June. Emma will spend two weeks attending this in-depth language camp with former Scholars' students Annika Bowers, Sierra Paloian, and Sorya Russell.
