Calendar Notes

Beauty and the Beast, the Scholars' Academy musical, is scheduled for performances on May 3 at 7:00 p.m.; May 4 at 10:00 a.m. (students only please); May 4 at 7:00 p.m.; and May 5 at 2:00 p.m. Eighty Scholars' Academy students are members of the cast.

Night of the Arts is scheduled for Tuesday, May 8, at 6:00 p.m. in the Halton Theatre on the CPCC campus. This is one of my favorite evenings of the school year. Students from all grade levels bring their talents to the stage in special performances that highlight foreign language, music, and physical education. The art display opens in the hallway of the Halton Theatre at 5:00 p.m. Donations will be taken for student art that parents wish to take home for their family art galleries. Join us in enjoying this special night.

The Scholars' Academy Sports Banquet will be held Friday evening, May 11, at 6:00 p.m. in the commons area. Awards will be presented to our interscholastic teams of soccer, cross country, boys' and girls' basketball, golf, and tennis. A special thank you to all of our volunteer coaches who made it happen for our players this year.

Spirit Week will be May 14 - 18. Day titles will be named by our 8th grade class. Additional end of year events will be showcased in further newsletters.

EOG, EOC, and Terra Nova testing looms on the schedule for the last few weeks of school. The NC tests are required for all students who are enrolled in grades 3 - 8, and for those students enrolled in high school credit courses of Algebra I, Biology I and English 9. Once testing is complete is it time for...

The Scholars' Academy Talent Show, which will be held in the gym/auditorium on Friday, June 1 at 9:00 a.m. Auditions for the talent show will be held on May 17 and May 18 from 8:30 - 9:20 a.m. and 10:25 - 11:15 a.m. with our 2012 8th grade class members in charge. This year, preliminary try-outs will be held in each classroom prior to the all-school auditions. Teachers will receive more information about this new procedure at the May staff meeting.

Save the Date for
Bookfair and Poetry Reading

The 2nd Annual Scholars' Academy PTO

Barnes and Noble Bookfair

and Student Poetry Reading

will be held on Tuesday, May 15, from 4:00-7:00 p.m.

(Poetry Reading 5:00-6:00 p.m.)

at Barnes and Noble Morrison

(4020 Sharon Road).

We need two or three volunteers to help at the store on the evening of the sale.  If you are interested, please e-mail Joanna Keel. We heard so many great poems last year! Let's hear from even more students this year! If your child is interested in reading a poem at the sale, please send an e-mail with your child's name and homeroom teacher to Joanna Keel. All current students and alumni of the school are welcome to participate in the reading.

As we near the end of the year, please be aware that ALL library books will be due back to the Scholars' Academy Library by Tuesday,

May 22. Please make every effort to get your child's books in by this date. We will be conducting inventory in the weeks that follow and it would be very helpful to have our books back by then.

Muy Bien, Scholars!

Congratulations to Ms. Castilla-Hobbs and the outstanding number of students who recently attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2012 National Spanish Examinations. This was the school's first year taking the exam, and our student participants ranged from grades 6 to 8. The students collectively earned 8 gold, 5 silver, and 16 bronze medals, along with 8 honorable mentions.

"Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious," said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, "because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with 143,641 students participating in 2012." The test is administered each year in grades 6 through 12, and is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

FPS Teams Sweep State Competition

For the second consecutive year, Scholars' Academy will represent North Carolina at the Future Problem Solving Program (FPSP) International Conference, which will be held this year at Indiana University from June 7-10.

Tackling the complex topic "Trade Barriers," the middle division team (Alex Harrison, Claire Liu, Priyanka Tejwani, and Charles Timm) and the junior division team (Laura Scott Cary, Ceyda Guley, Aarushi Patil, and Sanjit Tatavarthy) fired up their critical thinking and creative problem skills to beat out fourteen other teams at the recent FPSP State Bowl held in Banner Elk, NC.

FPS - State Champs 2012

Both Scholars' teams took first place in the global issues team booklet. In addition, the middle division team won first place for their action skit, while the junior team placed second.

To recap, our school participates in the FPS Team Global Issues Problem Solving Competitive Program. Four-member teams research and apply the six-step FPS process to at least three topics annually under the guidance of trained parent volunteer coaches. This year's topics included "All In A Day's Work," "Coral Reefs," "Human Rights," and "Trade Barriers" under the superb coaching of Hannah Harrison, with assistant coach Toni Hemming. To help better understand the select topics, Ms. Lannon, Mr. Yodice, along with parents Mr. Patil, Ms. Xiao, and Mr. and Mrs. Timm graciously shared their time and knowledge.

Now the teams and alternates start preparing for this year's International Conference, featuring the topic "Pharmaceuticals." They will compete against teams from all over the world, including Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and China. On behalf of the school community, we wish you all the best!!

Another Successful Grandparents Day

Over 180 grandparents graced our school with their presence on Friday, April 13. AllGrandparents Day 2012 were greeted by a group of kindergarteners and 5th graders with flowers made by the students in art class. Grandparents were treated to breakfast along with musical performances by 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders. During their classroom visits, some grandparents learned a song about recycling, others were quizzed on their knowledge of North Carolina history, and several participated in a discussion about the fateful Titanic voyage.

The success of this year's Grandparents Day can be attributed to our dedicated committee of volunteers. Specifically, Teri Povinelli (chair), Stephanie Inch, Ingrid James, Debbie Orostin, Maura O'Sullivan and Megan Pierce.  Thanks especially to our grandparents, who continue to make this annual event a memorable one!

Bravo, Scholars!

Claire Liu (7th grade) got a Superior rating at the NCMTA (NC Music Teacher Association) State-West Contest on March 31 for her piano performance in the Senior A division. She is now invited to perform on the Superior/Honors Recital at the NCMTA Conference at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in November. Congratulations, Claire!

On April 14, Scholars' 7th grader Tyler Smith paddled in the men's kayak field at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials for Whitewater Slalom Canoe and Kayaking at the U.S. National Whitewater Center. His best run, 129.01 seconds, was good enough for 20th of 29. Tyler began training at the whitewater center a year ago. Click here for the Charlotte Observer article. Way to go, Tyler!
