Choose the correct answer.
A test is:
a) A method of
evaluating the skills of an individual or group.
b) A set of standardized questions to
measure achievement.
c) A particular process of assessing.
d) All of the above.
e) None of the above.
The end of third quarter marks the beginning of standardized testing.
- Seventh and eighth grade Spanish students will complete the National Spanish exam on March 20 and 21.
- Terra Nova testing for grades 3 through 7 is scheduled for March 26 - 29.
- Eighth grade students will take the PLAN exam this year in lieu of the Terra Nova.
- Eighth grade students who are taking Chinese will be assessed on their skills in that language with the YCT given March 28.
Our testing sessions for March 26 - 29 are scheduled for the mornings, except for the
Chinese exam. Content areas covered by this variety of tests we are administering include reading, language, mathematics, science, and social studies. Please (sorry for the shouty capitals, but this is important),
- HAVE YOUR CHILD AT SCHOOL ON TIME (not at 8:30, but at 8:20 or 8:25);
- MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD IS WELL RESTED;
- MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD HAS A GOOD BREAKFAST.
There you have it. This is good advice all the time, but is especially important during testing. There are no make-up days for Terra Nova testing, so if your child is late or is not able to be at school, the results from a particular test will not be part of their achievement portfolio for this year.
Students in grades 3, 4, 6, 8 and Algebra I will be participating in field tests for EOG's and EOC's on April 16. Field tests are used to "test" the items that will be included on the EOG and EOC tests the year following the field test. Questions based on the new Common Core and Essential Standards to be implemented beginning in 2012-2013 will be the focus of the field tests this year. The Algebra I test will be online as NC gears up to implement all state testing via computer.
EOG's will be administered the week of May 21, with EOC's to follow the week after the Memorial Day holiday ( a reminder will follow later in the school year.
(d) is the correct answer.
Congratulations to Nicholas Lowell who advances to the NC National Geography Bee. The state contest will be held at UNC-Charlotte on March 30.

Director Search Update
Our search for a new Executive Director is well underway. Coleman Lew has identified potential candidates over the past few
months. These individuals
went through an in-depth interview process with the search firm. In late February, the search committee met
with Coleman Lew for a presentation and review of potential candidates.
From this meeting, we selected a group of potential candidates with strong educational backgrounds and leadership qualities. The search committee will be interviewing each of these candidates in person. Depending on the results of those interviews, the Board of Directors will review and discuss which candidates will continue to move forward to the final round of interviews. All sourcing and recruiting efforts will continue until we have extended an offer for the position.
For more information on Coleman Lew, please visit their website at www.colemanlew.com.

MathCounts Team Heads to
State Competition
On February 18, Metrolina Regional Scholars' Academy's MathCounts team competed with around 30 other schools in the Charlotte area chapter competition and came in 2nd place in the team competition, which uses
the team's individual and team round scores.
Our official team of four all placed in the top twenty in individual scores, with the captain, Auston Li, placing 4th overall with a nearly perfect individual score. Our team was the only team at chapter to get a perfect score in the team round.
The four team members (Auston Li, Alice Liu, Ronak Bhagia, and Claire Liu) earned the right to represent our chapter at the state competition on March 16 at the North Carolina School of Science and Math (NCSSM) in Durham.
Also representing the Scholars' Academy were six individual competitors, who also did well in the competition. The individual competitors were Nicholas Lowell, Rajan Tayal, Nadia Ekezue, Kyle Mitchell, Michael Yang and Trevor Daino.

Bravo, Scholars!
Simran Bhatia (4th grade/Mrs. Miller) raised funds for the American Heart Association on her 10th birthday. She decided not to accept any gifts from friends and family and instead asked them to contribute towards the fund with as little as $1 or as much as they wished to contribute. She raised $330, including a gift matched from her father's employer (Bank of America).
