ALUMNI VOLUNTEERS SUPPORT FRESHMAN FORMATION WEEKEND FOR CLASS OF 2020
This year's Freshman Formation Weekend was held July 24th-26th on the Servite campus.  More than 200 incoming freshmen participated, with over 50 student volunteers serving throughout the weekend.  Seventeen Servite alumni served as alumni guides for the entire weekend,  with about 15 additional alumni attending  various events.

"I cannot overstate the importance of the role of alumni during Freshman Formation Weekend," said Formation Director Brendan Ronan.  "Each year as we welcome the new generation of Servite Friars to the family, it is often the voice of the alumni during that first weekend on campus that makes the greatest impact on the freshmen.  There is no group more suited to pass on the Servite tradition - from the charism to the formation themes to a passion for all things Servite - than our own alumni."

This year's Formation Weekend was dedicated to the memory of Christopher Roth '09, a former Prior and member of the first class to participate in Formation Weekend.  Roth's classmate, Torian Pizzola '09, was one of the alumni volunteers.  "One of Chris's favorite quotes, 'Get After It' was printed on the Formation Weekend tee shirts. That's exactly what we did. We got after it, " said Pizzola. "The freshmen, upperclassmen, alumni volunteers, and staff all showed incredible spirit and enthusiasm this year and Chris would have been proud to see that."

If you'd like to volunteer next year, watch for an announcement in this newsletter in Spring 2017.

DETERMINATION BRINGS LONG-AWAITED DIPLOMA
Mark Huff '76 receives his original diploma from President Pete Bowen '82.
Mark Huff was a standout on the football field when he attended Servite, but a little problem with a history class kept him from receiving his diploma at graduation time.  While always considered a member of the Class of 1976, it was a longtime goal of Mark's to finish that class and receive an official Servite diploma.  Last year, he took an independent study course with Servite history teacher Ben Van Dyk '01 and completed his final credits.  In July, Mark came to Servite to receive his diploma (yes, we still had the original diploma from 1976 in our files!) in a celebration attended by Servite President Pete Bowen '82, Principal Mike Brennan, Coach Larry Toner and Van Dyk. Classmates Curtis Wesseln '76 and Gary Overman '76 were also in attendance, along with students from Child's World Pre-School in Huntington Beach who were on a field trip supervised by Overman.  Congratulations, Mark!

Shh!  It's a surprise for Coach Toner!
On June 30, 2016, Coach Larry Toner retired from Servite after more than 40 years as a teacher, coach and mentor. Many alumni and friends have asked how to share a story or send him a message about his impact on their lives. Therefore, the Alumni Association will be creating a tribute book to present to Coach Toner at a future event.  We invite you to send a message or share your favorite "Toner Tale," but don't tell Coach. We are hoping to surprise him! CLICK HERE
