Basketball Recap

 Success as a Team

Servite Basketball has come together in many ways this year.  The Friars had four wins over Top 10 ranked teams this season, including El Toro, Canyon, Orange Lutheran and Sonora.  This is the most in school history. Servite also had 17 wins, which is the most since 2005.  This is Servite's first season in six years in which they have had a winning record.  They also had three Trinity League wins which ties them for the most league wins since the 1999 team.  The team advanced to the quarterfinals, which is the furthest they have gone in the playoffs in six years.  They were ranked as high #8 in the OC Varsity rankings, which is the highest since 1997.  The I-15 Classic is the first tournament win since 2006 and they also brought back the student section.  A special thanks to Brian Francke for bringing the students together.  Neil Pau'u made 2nd Team- All Trinity League and Louis Juego was 1st Team- All Trinity League! Congrats to Servite Basketball at its finest.

SERVITE VS ST FRANCIS

Servite took a Trinity League break and took on St Francis.  They played very well in the beginning of the match-up, and led St Francis 27-13 going into the half.  In the third quarter St Francis went on an offensive scoring driving putting 15 points on the board, as Servite only scored six.  At the end of the third quarter, Servite still led the Knights 33-28.  St Francis continued their scoring drive and had a two-point lead with seconds left in the game.  Louis Juego then hit a three-point shot with seven seconds left to improve the Friars record to 14-8 with a 44-43 victory.  Servite had a close one and they knew they would have to step up their game if they were going to defeat their next opponent, Orange Lutheran.

SERVITE VS OLU

On paper Servite wasn't supposed to win the match-up against Orange Lutheran.  The Lancers were a force in Orange County rankings and sat pretty with a number two-spot in the OC Varsity rankings, when the Friars took them on.  The last time the Friars and Lancers met up a couple weeks prior to this match-up the result wasn't the same.  After four quarters of intense ball play the Friars defeated the Lancers, 38-37.  Two weeks before this meet, it was a 64-29 loss for the Friars.  A home game at Servite is a little different than a road one, though.  For the entire match-up, the largest and loudest student section rooted for their favorite team in black.  The Lancers started the scoring with a 2-0 lead, but the Friars stayed on top for the remainder of the game.  At the end of the first quarter Servite was on top, 8-5. In the beginning of the second quarter, Neil Pau'u scored a three-pointer to increase the Friar lead, 11-6.  Four minutes later, the Lancers started to inch back, scoring five points while the Friars only had two.  Trevor Treinen and Juego scored back to back three-pointers to create a 21-16 cushion going into the half.  The Friars continued to dominate the scoring leading 30-21 to end the third quarter.  The final and most important quarter was offensively pleasing on both ends.  With over five minutes to go in the game, the Friars had a seven-point lead (31-24).  The Lancers continued to get closer and with a little over a minute left they were only down by two.  Servite resisted the Lancer defense and took the one-point win despite the Lancers scoring a shot on the buzzer.  There was never a dull moment in the match-up and this game proved that Servite really is a force in one of the toughest leagues in the nation.

SERVITE VS JSERRA

Servite traveled to JSerra hoping to take another Trinity League win. The last time these two teams met up was in Servite's gym where the end result was a 34-68 Friar loss. This time the result was the same, but the score was different. Brandon Rice opened up the Friar scoring with a simple layup. This confidence led to two three-pointers compliments of Treinen. Shortly after, the Lions went on a 10-0 scoring drive, leading to a 18-9 Friar deficit to end the quarter. There was less energy on both sides of the ball in the second quarter. Rice had a swift pass to Pau'u for one of the only Friar shots of the quarter. At the half the Lions were running away with the match-up, 26-12.The Friars were determined to make a comeback in the second half of the game. They came out refreshed and scored 12 points in the third quarter by five different Friars. Midway through the fourth quarter Pau'u hit a three-pointer to cut the Lion lead to 44-30. The Friars managed to put up 19 more points in the fourth quarter before the final buzzer rang. This offensive drive wasn't enough as the Lions won the game, 57-43.

SERVITE VS MATER DEI

The game started with an offensive drive from the Monarch seniors.  Mater Dei had seven points on the board before Juego hit a three-pointer from downtown to start the Friar scoring.  Brandon Rice added two to the board to end the first quarter. (5-14) In the second quarter, Travis Waller got a layup and a three-pointer to start up an offensive drive.  Eric Torres and Treinen added two more three-pointers before going into the half.  (16-25) Coming out after the half, the Friars started slow.  The only three points scored in the third quarter were property of Pau'u. In the fourth quarter, the Friar team was rejuvenated and put up a game high 18 points from four different shooters.  Juego had another three-point play and Pau'u hit many free throws.  With two minutes remaining Treinen hit back to back three-pointers and Max Shlemmer also made his mark with a layup and a shot from downtown.  The Friars ultimately lost 47-37 in a fast paced game.  Servite was done with the Trinity League and was eligible for the playoffs.  They knew they had to make a splash to get the respect they craved in the playoffs.  Their first competitor was Arroyo High School.

Playoffs

SERVITE VS ARROYO

In the first quarter, Servite and Arroyo juggled lead changes play by play.  Pau'u had back-to-back baskets to start the Friar scoring midway through the first quarter to tie the game, 4-4.  Torres hit a three-pointer and layup before the end of the first quarter.  The Friars were on top of the scoreboard, 16-12 as the first buzzer of the match-up went off.  In the second quarter, the Arroyo Knights went on a scoring drive taking a 17-16 lead.  Pau'u scored two to take the lead back from the raging Knights.  Waller then hit a three-pointer and an additional six points for the quarter alone.  Arroyo kept up with the scoring and led by one at the half 26-25.  When the Friars ran back on the court it went back to a struggle for the lead.  Waller started the Friar scoring and after that Pau'u, Torres, and Rice all scored.  Torres hit back-to-back shots to build a 44-36 lead going into the fourth quarter.  Once in the fourth, the Friars continued dominating the scoreboard, scoring 16 points as a team.  Waller kept up with the trend of back-to-back plays and scored a season high 20-points for the match-up.  Pau'u followed suit putting up 15 -points of his own.  Servite took a 60-47 win to advance to the next round of the playoffs against the tough Sonora High School team.

SERVITE VS SONORA

Servite entered the gym knowing that they had to defeat their opponent to advance to the quarterfinals of the CIF playoffs.  The Friars broke into the scoring first and it stayed that way most of the match-up. Rice had nine of his 11 points in the first quarter. The defense on both ends was strong and the score was 11-6 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Rice added two more points from the line. The Raiders kept up with the scoring, only trailing by a few points most of the quarter. Juego hit one of his many three-point plays of the night to help keep the Friars on top by two going into the half, 22-20. In the third quarter, the scoring started with a three-pointer compliments of Juego.  Waller added a basket from downtown of his own, but it wasn't enough to keep the Raiders from charging through the quarter to take their first lead of the match-up. At the end of the third quarter, the Raiders were up 29-28.  Juego opened up the fourth quarter scoring with another three-pointer to take the lead back. Waller added another two to distance the score, but the quarter wasn't near over. The Friars were up by 11 points before the Raiders came back, fighting offensively. With 16 seconds left in the game, Sonora was within two points of the Friars. Servite's defense wouldn't let them score and the Friars took a 44-40 victory from Sonora. Five Friars added points to the scoreboard to help Servite advance to the next round of the CIF playoffs against the tough Brea Olinda team.

SERVITE VS BREA OLINDA

The game started with an offensive drive by the Wildcats.  Rice started the Friar scoring, but soon after the Wildcats drove seven more points on to the board.  Juego hit a three pointer to end the quarter with Servite trailing, 14-5. In the second quarter, Pau'u had an offensive charge scoring all eight of the Friar points. At the half Servite was down, 27-13.After the half, Servite put up 12 points for the quarter alone.  It wasn't enough to keep up with the fast Wildcats who put up 13.  Rice had a three-point play to get the Friars a little closer.  Pau'u, Waller, and Juego all scored to try to catch up with the Wildcats, but every time the Friars made a basket, Brea Olinda retaliated with a basket of their own.  Both student sections were riled up, cheering their hearts out and by the end of the third quarter, the Friars were down 40-25.  In the fourth quarter, the Friar team was rejuvenated and put up a game high 14 points from five different shooters.  Joey Landeis and Torres had a three-pointer apiece and Pau'u and Waller contributed to the points put up in the quarter.  This 55-39 loss eliminated Servite from the CIF Playoff Quarterfinals.  Servite had substantial success this year.  They had three Trinity League wins, which hasn't happened in two seasons.  Servite is proud of the basketball team's success.

Soccer Recap

Success as a Team

Servite soccer has done an outstanding job this year and has taken large strides as a program.  They finished third in the Trinity League, not even knowing if they would reach a playoff berth and ended up taking their team all the way to the finals.  Servite soccer has not gone to the CIF Finals since 1982.  Servite has never made it as far in the Regionals as this year's team did.  This was an outstanding first year for Coach Spencer and each member of the team grew substantially throughout the season, mentally and physically.

SERVITE VS OLU

The Servite soccer team collected a much needed Trinity League win as they defeated Orange Lutheran 2-0.  Servite honored its ten seniors before the game at home with a short ceremony on the field with their parents. All the seniors started the game together and accounted for both goals and both assists.   Servite scored first with 14 minutes left in the first half on a beautiful corner kick by Davis Brady.  The kick bent across the face of the goal and Joey Gober, who was at the far post, headed it in for the 1-0 lead. Servite held the 1-0 lead until eight minutes were left in the second half; this is when Servite scored again on another Brady corner kick.  This time, Ryan Godinez was on the other end of the kick and headed it in by the near post for the second goal.  The Servite defense collected its eighth shutout of the season in the victory.

SERVITE VS JSERRA

Servite jumped out to take a quick 2-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the game by scoring two goals off corner kicks by Brady.  The first goal was scored by Daniel Munoz, who fired the ball into the net from the far post, while Mike Wolitski was credited with the second goal on a loose ball in front of the net. JSerra fought its way back into the game by taking advantage of Servite mistakes and evened the match, 2-2 at the half. JSerra opened the half with a 3-2 lead when they scored their third unanswered goal.  However, Servite showed poise and began to control the flow of the game and possession of the ball.   At about the 65th minute, JSerra fouled Wolitski in the box.  Servite was awarded a penalty kick, which J.T. Cook converted to tie the game at 3-3. Serra scored one final goal with about five minutes left in the game and held on for the 4-3 win.

SERVITE VS ST JOHN BOSCO

Servite picked up a hard fought victory at home against St. John Bosco by a score of 2-0.
Servite got on the board in the 14th minute of the game when Wolitski headed a ball into the goal for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.   Gober collected the assist on the goal that put the Friars up 1-0.
With only about a minute left in the first half, Esen Harris brought the ball up the right sideline and made a beautiful crossing pass to Felipe Silva, who knocked the ball into the net for the 2-0 lead.  Servite possessed the ball much of the second half and controlled the flow of the game, creating several scoring chances for the offense.  The Servite defense also played very well in earning its 9th shutout of the season.  Goalkeeper Jared Hemann had three saves in goal for the Friar defense.

SERVITE VS MATER DEI

The Servite soccer team finished its Trinity League schedule by defeating a tough Mater Dei team on the road 1-0.  Servite seemed to be controlling the pace of the game and the time of possession in the first half, but could not convert on its scoring chances.  The half ended in a scoreless tie.  In the second half, Servite finally broke through in the 55th minute when Cook passed the ball up the right side of the field to Silva, who then fired a shot to beat the Mater Dei goalkeeper for the only goal of the game.  The Servite defense then took over and tried to preserve the team's 10th shutout of the season. The defensive play of the game came with only about two minutes left when Mater Dei tried to score, only to hit the left post.  The ball squirted away from the Servite goalkeeper and rolled in front of the open net.  Defender Christian Packard alertly raced to the ball and cleared it just as a Mater Dei player was about to pounce on the loose ball and score.  With the win, Servite clinched third place in the Trinity League and a berth in the CIF playoffs.

ROAD TO THE FINALS

SERVITE VS LONG BEACH WILSON

The Servite soccer team opened the CIF playoffs with a road game at Long Beach Wilson.  Long Beach Wilson controlled possession of the ball early in the game and scored the first goal in the eighth minute to lead 1-0.  They continued to play in the Servite end of the field, but in the seventeenth minute, Servite took advantage of a scoring chance.  Servite passed the ball up the field and Wolitski collected the ball near the top of the box.  Wolitski then passed to Silva, who converted the goal to even the score. The goal ignited the Friars, who scored again in the thirty-third minute, this time off a corner kick.  The corner kick went across the face of the net to Silva, who redirected the ball to a waiting Dylan Smith who finished for the 2-1 lead. The Servite defense was tested numerous times in the second half, but still managed to cling to the lead.  In the last five minutes of the game, Long Beach Wilson played the majority of the time in the Servite end, but Servite's defense turned away each scoring chance.  Goalkeeper Keith Murphy led the defense and had two saves in goal and each Servite defender took turns making big plays to help preserve the victory.  Servite moved on to the second round of the CIF playoffs and faced El Toro High School.

SERVITE VS EL TORO

The game started off with both teams having some good early chances, but none of the teams were able to capitalize on the scoring opportunities. In the 21st minute, Servite scored on a corner kick by Silva.  The ball crossed the front of the net and was headed by Elijah Barajas back to Harris, who knocked the ball into the net for the 1-0 lead.  After that, the Servite defense took over and held El Toro scoreless.  Goalkeeper, Murphy, kept the Friars afloat by stopping six shots on the goal in the process.  The Servite defense collected its eleventh shutout of the season in the victory.
Servite advanced on to the CIF Quarterfinals against Claremont High School.

SERVITE VS CLAREMONT

The game was a very tense, defensive struggle, which was an incredibly even match throughout.  Both teams had some very good scoring chances during the game, but neither could capitalize on them.  The game ended in a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation.  In overtime, Goalkeeper Murphy made an incredible save in addition to his five others during regulation to help preserve the shutout.  The game then proceeded to penalty kicks.  Hemann came in as goalkeeper for penalty kicks.  Servite converted on its first four penalty kicks compliments of Cook, Silva, Kevin Engesser and Smith. Claremont failed to convert on two of its first four, and the Friars were victorious.  The Servite defense was strong again in the victory, notching its twelfth shutout of the season and its fourth in the last five games.  Servite then moved on to the CIF Semifinals against Loyola High School.

SERVITE VS LOYOLA

The game was a defensive struggle in the first half, with neither team scoring, yet each controlling possession for parts of the half.  The Friars defense turned away numerous scoring chances in the second half, as the Cubs got dangerously close to the goal on several throw ins and set pieces.  Goalkeeper Murphy had five saves and he leaned on his defense for a few more as the Servite defenders also knocked three potential goals away from the net.  As the second half extended into extra time, Servite capitalized on a scoring chance.  After a free kick, the Servite players were scrambling for the loose ball in traffic in the penalty box when the ball bounced out to the top of the box. Defender Munoz pounced on the ball and fired a shot into the upper right corner of the net for the winning goal with less than a minute left in extra time.  The Servite defense collected its thirteenth shutout of the season and its fifth in the last six games.  Servite then advanced to the CIF Championship Game and faced San Clemente High School.

SERVITE VS SAN CLEMENTE

Servite soccer has come a long way from being the number three seed in the Trinity League. They knew they had more talent then that idea equated, so they stepped up and took on the challenge of a lifetime. The last time the Friar soccer squad stepped on the field of a CIF Finals match-up was back in 1982. With a 30-year curse beckoning on their door, they knew they had to prepare both mentally and physically for the game they were about to endure. The San Clemente Tritons had the same idea. Both teams went to battle on the field. Swords were drawn and both goalies wouldn't let the ball pass through, most of the game. One ball was able to make its way through, though. San Clemente took their shot and the ball intensely flew off the bottom of the cross bar, hit the ground and then bounced off the far post, with twenty minutes left in the first half. The Tritons offense took multiple shots the rest of the game but came up empty. Servite took several shots as well but couldn't convert any into a goal. Jared Hemann had five saves in first half alone. Servite has shutout their last three competitors in the playoffs and this was the first goal allowed since their victory against Long Beach Wilson.  A very talented Triton team defeated the Friars by a score of 1-0 and were crowned the CIF Division 1 Champions. Servite wasn't done with their season and traveled to University City High School to compete in the first round of the Regional playoffs.

 Regionals

SERVITE VS UNIVERSITY CITY

Servite took on the University City High School Centurions in the first round of the Regionals.  The game was action packed to say the least.  In the first half, Wolitski nailed one in for the Friars to take an early 1-0 lead. A couple minutes later, the Centurions took a shot and it knocked off the upper post.  The Centurions weren't finished, they shot later in the half and scored to tie up the match-up, 1-1. That didn't set well with the Friars, which led to Munoz scoring another Friar goal minutes later to take the lead back.  At the half, the Friars were up by one. The Servite defense completely took over shutting the Centurions out from any scoring in the second half.  Toward the end of the half,  Barajas came through with another goal.  Servite wasn't done yet though; Gober hit one last goal to ensure that the Friars would advance to the next round of the playoffs. Servite defeated the University City team 4-1 and took on Canoga Park next at Orange Coast College.

SERVITE VS CANOGA PARK

The game started defensively and no one was getting close to scoring until the 47th minute of the match-up when Canoga Park's Bryan Suarez nailed one in.  They carried that lead most of the game.  It wasn't until there was under ten seconds left of stoppage time that Silva knocked one in for the Friars.  Gober headed the ball back to Wolitski who headed the ball to Silva who lightly knocked it in.  It was a beautiful goal and led the Friars into overtime.  In Regional Regulation there is only one 15-minute session of overtime.  This overtime proved that defense was the key, as none of the teams scored.  The game then went to penalty kicks.  It looked promising for Servite as Canoga Park missed their first penalty kick. Cook made his penalty kick, but after that the tides turned.  Canoga Park made the rest of their penalty kicks and Servite couldn't get another in.  Servite ended up taking a 3-1 loss on penalty kicks, after finishing regulation in a 1-1 tie.
