Basketball News
Servite took on La Sierra High School first in the I-15 tournament and outscored them 54-49. Servite took the immediate lead, scoring 18 points in the first quarter while La Sierra only scored 12. At the half the Friars were up 33-19. In the third quarter, La Sierra went on an offensive drive, scoring 19 points. Servite held their own putting up 15 points. In the fourth quarter La Sierra kept up the offensive drive but ultimately Servite left the courts with the win. Louis Juego had 23 points for the match-up.
The Friars next took on Temescal Canyon. This was another close game, but Servite took the 43-39 victory. The first quarter stayed close in scoring with Servite on top by one point. (15-14) By the half the Friars led Temescal Canyon in a tight match-up. (23-21) In the third quarter, Servite scored a high 13 points while Temescal Canyon only scored five. This gave them a competitive edge going into the final quarter. In this quarter, Temescal Canyon scored 13 points while the Friars had only seven, but Servite already sealed the victory. The Friar scoring leaders were Juego with 16 points, Neil Pau'u with 11 and Trevor Treinen with 10.
Servite took on Costa Mesa in the third game of the tournament. Servite was down by one at the end of the first quarter. (9-10) Servite had a high 19 points in the second quarter while Costa Mesa had only 13 to call their own. Servite had a nice five point cushion going into the half. (28-23) Coming out after halftime, Costa Mesa and Servite put up 41 points together in the action packed third quarter. Servite ultimately had a two point lead going into the fourth quarter and maintained that lead until the end of the game. Juego put up a season high 26 points for the Friars. Brandon Rice added 10 points of his own. Servite won 62-60. This led them to the Championship game against Heritage.
The game against Heritage was fast moving. The score was tied up 23-23 at the half. It wasn't until the third quarter that Servite scored 18 points and the Friar defense held Heritage to only five. In the fourth quarter, Heritage only put up nine points and Servite was named the Champions of the I-15 Tournament with a score of 54-37. Juego led the Friars with 19 points. Jake Rivera contributed 10 points and Eric Torres had nine. Juego was named MVP of the Tournament.
SERVITE VS. SANTA MARGARITA
Servite opened up league play with a 51-43 victory over the tough Santa Margarita team. Servite walked into the league game with a 11-4 record. Treinen took control of the game starting with a three-pointer on the first possession. The Friars continued their offensive drive throughout the first quarter leading 14-7 to end the first quarter. Servite's defense prevented the Eagles from getting a lead in the second quarter, but Santa Margarita kept slowly getting closer. Juego shot a three-pointer to give the Friars a 21-14 lead. The half ended and the Friars were still on top 25-17. The rest of the game was action packed. Servite easily remained on top throughout most of the third quarter. The Eagles offense picked up momentum and tied up the game at 36 a piece. The Friars regained the lead and were up by ten with about a minute left in the match-up. (48-38) Juego sealed the victory with another three-pointer. "It was a good win for us and we expected to win tonight," said Head Coach John Morris. "I told the guys to enjoy it tonight, get some sleep, and come ready tomorrow to prepare for Olu." The leading scorers for the game were Pau'u with 15, Juego with 13, and Treinen and Torres with eight each.
SERVITE VS. ORANGE LUTHERAN
Servite took a short trip to Orange Lutheran with a lot to prove. The Lancers were coming off a 95-81 loss to a very tough St. John Bosco team. The game started with Orange Lutheran taking complete control of the game. The rest of the match continued in this direction. At the end of the first quarter, the Lancers had a 19-6 lead over the Friars. Juego had all six points for the Friars and ended up with a team high nine points for the game. Orange Lutheran had built a 32-14 lead at halftime. After the half the Lancers came out with more speed and agility and ran the court. They doubled their points before the final buzzer rang. This 64-29 Friar loss gave Servite a 1-1 record in the Trinity League. Juego had nine points, and following him was Rice and Pau'u with eight points each.
SERVITE VS. JSERRA
Servite basketball walked in their gym knowing that they had a tough opponent ahead of them. JSerra was ranked third in Orange County and had an excellent preseason. The game started with a JSerra take over when the Lions scored first. Torres pushed a three-pointer through the heavy JSerra defense to end the first quarter which brought on a Lions 12-5 lead. In the second quarter JSerra had an offensive charge scoring 14 points, while the Friars only had eight to call their own. Treinen got a three-pointer at the buzzer making the score 26-14 with the Lions on top. After the half, JSerra went right back to their offensive business and scored 20 points in the quarter. Servite scored another 20 points for both remaining quarters, which wasn't enough as the Lions were victorious with a final score of 68-34.The leading scorers for the Friars were Juego with seven points, as well as Max Shlemmer and Pau'u who also contributed six points each.
SERVITE VS. ST JOHN BOSCO
Servite traveled to St. John Bosco knowing that they had a challenge ahead of them. The Braves are a tough team with a lot of talent on all platforms. The game started with St. John Bosco scoring first, but Shlemmer and Juego hit back to back shots to take a 5-4 lead. By the end of the first quarter the Braves were up 17-9. In the second quarter Servite couldn't seem to keep up with the physical team.
Treinen hit a three-pointer to lead the Friars into the half trailing 34-15.After the half, St. John Bosco sped up their scoring drive getting 20 points alone in the third quarter. Servite only had five points for the quarter, which included another Treinen three-pointer. In the fourth quarter, Servite charged offensively scoring 18 points by five different Friar shooters. This initiative wasn't enough, and Servite took a 61-38 loss to the swift Brave team. The leading scorers for the Friars were Pau'u with 13 points, Juego with seven, and Treinen and Shlemmer with six apiece.
SERVITE VS. MATER DEI
Servite took their first and only lead in the beginning of the first quarter with a three-pointer by Treinen. After that Mater Dei showed why they are first place in the county by going on a offensive drive. By the end of the first quarter the Monarchs were up 14-4. In the second quarter Pau'u scored all of the Friar points. Servite's defense held the Monarchs to eight points for the quarter. The halftime score was 22-7. In the third quarter Treinen got another three-pointer and Pau'u had a layup to increase the Friar score. Their points weren't enough though as the Monarchs had a 34-12 lead by the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter Treinen got his third three-pointer of the game. The Monarchs defeated the Friars 53-16. Treinen had nine points and Pau'u had seven points for Servite.

SERVITE VS. SANTA MARGARITA
Servite Basketball traveled to Santa Margarita hoping to sweep the Eagles in Trinity League play. It had been a tough couple of weeks for the Friars. They played the heart of the Trinity League teams and their win against the Eagles felt like a long lost memory. They got up and brushed themselves off ready to challenge Santa Margarita. The first quarter went by and the Eagles kept the lead for most of it. It wasn't until the final minutes that Servite made a comeback and tied the game at 12-12 to end the quarter. Waller got a layup to increase the lead in the second quarter and the Friars followed that trend. Servite would score and Eagles would retaliate and score back. There were many lead changes in this quarter. The game was tied up 22-22 going into the half. Servite came out from the locker room ready to roll. The Eagles scored and Juego retaliated with a three-pointer. Treinen and Juego then hit back to back three-pointers. Pau'u kept up with the tradition and hit two of his own three-pointers before the quarter was over. In the fourth quarter Servite led throughout the quarter though the Eagles crept close at times. The Eagles were within one point when Treinen got a three-pointer in the middle of the fourth quarter to create a four-point lead. Servite defeated the Eagles 49-45. Pau'u was the leading scorer with 14 points for the match-up. Trienen was right behind him with 13 points, in which three of them were shot from downtown. Following after that was Juego who had 10 points, Waller with six, Rice with four and Shlemmer with two.

Soccer News
SERVITE VS. OLU
The Friar soccer team won their first Trinity League game by defeating Orange Lutheran 2-0 on the road. Servite struck early when Dylan Smith scored a goal in the 4th minute off a pass from Colton Goodness. Smith got behind the defense and lofted a nice shot that beat the Orange Lutheran goalkeeper who came out to try to stop the play. Servite scored again two minutes later when Smith assisted on Felipe Silva's goal, which gave Servite the 2-0 lead. From there on, the Servite defense took over and goalkeeper Jared Hemann had 6 saves in goal to help preserve the 2-0 shutout.
SERVITE VS. JSERRA
The game ended in a scoreless tie, 0-0, with both teams having numerous chances to score in the second half. The Servite defense was tested on numerous occasions, but still managed to come away with its seventh shutout of the season. There were several tense minutes late in the game as JSerra had many shots at the net, but each time the Servite defense managed to clear the ball. Hemann had 13 saves in goal for the Friars.

SERVITE VS. ST JOHN BOSCO
Servite traveled to St. John Bosco for its third Trinity League match of the season. Servite got on the scoreboard in the third minute of the game for a quick 1-0 lead. J.T. Cook sent a ball up to Joey Gober, who took the ball up the right side and then crossed it to Kevin Engesser. Engesser shot the ball, which was stopped by the goalie, but Engesser quickly drove the rebound home for the goal. St. John Bosco tied the score about seven minutes later off of a Servite turnover. However, Servite struck again three minutes later when they were awarded a free kick about 40 yards outside the goal. Cook lofted the free kick and Gober headed the ball toward the goal, towards a waiting Ryan Godinez who headed the ball in for the score. The score remained 2-1 until the ending moments of the game. Servite had numerous chances to score but could not net the game winner. Instead, St. John Bosco was awarded a goal on a controversial call in extra time that evened the score 2-2. The Servite team played very well all game. They had great energy and hustle against a very good St. John Bosco squad.
SERVITE VS. MATER DEI
Servite took on the tough Mater Dei team at home and came away with a 1-0 loss. The game was tied 0-0 at the half and neither team was able to generate any scoring opportunities. In the second half, the score remained tied until Servite gave up a foul just outside the box with about 11 minutes left in the contest. Mater Dei played the free kick outside the Servite wall and centered the ball for an opportunity. Servite was not able to clear the ball and Mater Dei converted on the short chance in front of the goal.
SERVITE VS. SANTA MARGARITA Servite struck first in the opening minutes of the game. Cook sent a free kick into the box and the ball bounced around for a few seconds before Elijah Barajas scored on the loose ball for an early 1-0 lead. The lead was short lived, though, as Santa Margarita evened the score a few minutes later. Servite scored later in the first half when they were awarded a penalty kick after the Santa Margarita goalkeeper interfered with a Servite player in the box. Cook took the shot for the Friars and gave them a 2-1 lead as they headed to the half. In the second half, Santa Margarita was also awarded a penalty kick when a Servite player was called for a hand ball in the box and the Eagles converted on the kick to knot the game at 2-2. Servite scored again when Goodness sent a ball across the front of the net, which the Santa Margarita goalkeeper managed to get a hand on. However, Esen Harris was there to head the ball into the net for another Servite lead. Santa Margarita then managed another goal late in the game to close the scoring and even the match at 3-3. Goalkeeper Keith Murphy had four saves on the afternoon for the Friars.

Wrestling News
MANN CLASSIC
The Mann Classic, hosted by Servite's Athletic Director Alan Clinton, was a fabulous event. It was held in the hills of Orange at the newly renovated gym at Santiago Canyon College. The Friars finished third out of 48 schools. Six Friars ended up placing in the finals after two days of many well fought battles. Johnny Beltran placed first and was the Champion in the 182-weight class. Jason Cone placed 2nd, Matt Lavey placed 7th, Keven Vidal placed 8th, and Cameron Amador took 7th. This was a successful event and it couldn't have taken placed without all the support from the Servite families who dedicated their time. Servite thanks them for a great event and is looking forward to a good season.
SIERRA NEVADA CLASSIC
Servite made the trip to Reno to compete in the prestigious Sierra Nevada Classic, where 84 teams from six states compete. This battle of the crowns had 720 wrestlers compete. The Friars had a great weekend in Reno where many lessons were learned in a great tournament where the competition is heavy. Servite finished 13th out of 84 schools and had three wrestlers make it to the second day of the tournament. Angel Cordova had a great day and went 3-1 in the 120-weight class. Vidal was also successful going 3-2. Cone and Beltran had two fantastic days and made it to the semifinals. Cone finished 4th with a 6-2 record in the 195-weight class. Beltran placed 2nd and made it to the Finals and went 5-1 in the 182-weight class. It was a great trip and experience for all the grapplers of Servite.

PEORIA INVITATIONAL
The New Year was a great success for the wrestlers at Peoria. The five counties of Arizona, which included, 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A, and 1A all came to compete. The Friars had two wrestlers in the Finals, Cone and Beltran. Cone had two great days and finished as the runner-up of the tournament. Beltran beat two undefeated wrestlers on his way to the championship where he defeated the two-time state champion with a 24-0 record to win the crown and be named MVP of the Tournament. Beltran was also named OC Athlete of the Week in OC Varsity.
SERVITE VS. SANTA MARGARITA
The Fight'n Friars Wrestlers started league play against the Santa Margarita Eagles. The lower levels dominated the mats defeating the young Eagles 62-3. Austin Carr was named the Wrestler of the Meet. Team 2 was victorious with a flawless 79-0 score and David Saunooke was named Wrestler of the Meet. The Team 1 Varsity Team had a battle that came down to the last match with Amador winning by pin to secure a 39-30 victory. Many of the Friars had phenomenal matches including Jacob Steins at 113, JJ Reed at 132 and Keven Vidal with a 5-4 upset. Friar Gordon Livermore continued the streak with a 14-4 victory. The Fight'n Friars then got three pins compliments of Justin Parcells, Beltran, and Cone to lead Servite to a 39-30 victory.
SAN CLEMENTE INVITATIONAL
Team 2 traveled down to south county to compete in the San Clemente Invitational. They finished the day in second place as a team, coming up short by four points against the first place team, San Diego. Paving the trail for the Friars was Andres Briones at 160, who came home with a Championship and was Wrestler of the Meet going 4-0. The runner-ups of the tournament were Noah Blakley-Beanes (120) and Alex Hinestrosa (195) who went 3-1. The third place finishers were Wolfgang Bernal (126), Saunooke (132), Ian Gaston (136), and Lavey (220). The fifth place finishers were Liam Cronin (106), William Lovest (145), Nico Kadlec (182) and Riley Paterson (152) who placed sixth. The sophomores were impressive at San Clemente and came home with a second place badge following only behind the Champions, Poway of San Diego. Joseph Schoolcraft went 4-0, was Champion at heavyweight, and was the Wrestler of the Meet. The runner-ups were AJ Silva (120), Alex Lee (132), and Tate Beachley (170) who all went 3-1. The third place finishers were Conlin Salerno (126), Michael Jurado (152), and AJ Carty (220). Thomas Bornhop rounded out the crew finishing seventh at 138.

Louis Juego- Basketball
Louis is always a great team player on and off the court. He is one of the leading scorers and is hard working. He had a season high 26 points against Costa Mesa High School in the I-15 Tournament. He led his team to victory by winning the I-15 and being named the MVP of the Tournament. In Trinity League play, he had 13 points against Santa Margarita. This season has been a thrill for Louis. He has enjoyed playing with the team and looks forward to every game especially when the student section is present. He hopes to continue playing well and wants to keep contributing to the team. His goal for this season is to do his best and win as many games as possible. His ultimate goal is to reach the CIF Championship.
JT Cook- Soccer
JT has made his presence known on the soccer field at Servite. He is a leader and always stays humble while making a difference on the field. He has had many assists and goals and is always a helping hand for his teammates. JT has consistently played on a very high level all season. He has played both in the midfield and defense. He has a knack for winning the ball. He wins his 1v1s as well as distributes the ball very well. He has the ability to lead the team as a sophomore. He works as hard as anyone on the field.
Jason Cone- Wrestling
Jason is a leader on the mats and on the team. He has been on Team 1 since his junior year and has been impactful both years. This season he placed 2nd at the Mann Classic, 4th in Sierra Nevada, and was runner-up of the Tournament at Peoria. He is one of three Friars to have a pin against Santa Margarita to help the team to a 39-30 victory. He also defeated Mason Kumashiro at at the OCWCA All-Star Classic at Marina High. He scored a takedown to beat the undefeated wrestler.
