Varsity Football (3-6)

Servite Football opened up Trinity League play against the top ranked Santa Margarita.  The Eagles were playing without their star quarterback Johnny Stanton who was injured the previous game.  The game started great defensively for Servite with a fumble recovery and interception in the first quarter.  It wasn't until the end of the second quarter that the Eagles scored their first touchdown of the game.  Going into the half it was 7-0, Eagles.  Santa Margarita wanted to defend their high ranking and managed to get two more touchdowns in the second half.  The Eagles defense shut out Servite and the game ended 21-0.

The next game was against Orange Lutheran where the climate was different.  Servite took control of the game in the first half.  Travis Waller rushed a touchdown in for the Friars in the first quarter.  At the end of the quarter Travis Waller threw an explosive pass to Andrew Moore for a 82-yard play scoring another touchdown.  After that Orange Lutheran scored a touchdown of their own. The Friars led 14-7 going into the half.  After the half Orange Lutheran defense took off, completely shutting out the Friar offense from scoring in the second half.  The Lancers scored a touchdown in the middle of the third tying the game.  Orange Lutheran scored two more times before the end of the game to bring on a final score of 28-14.  Servite knew they were getting better but were going to have to undergo some changes to  try  and pull a win the following week against the JSerra Lions.

The weather was chilly and the Friars were just getting heated up for this important Trinity League match-up against JSerra.  The first touchdown of the game came from Travis Waller who passed the ball to Nicholas Difilippo who scored a touchdown.  Later in the game Travis Waller ran for a pertinent first down.  He then threw a 58-yard bomb down the field to Neil Pau'u for another touchdown.  Servite led 14-0 going into the half.  In the third, Travis Waller connected with Andrew Moore for another touchdown bringing the score to 21-0.  The final scoring play came from Travis Waller running in a touchdown himself.  The athleticism of Travis Waller and the rest of the Servite squad kept the Friar fans entertained and on the edge of their seats.  Joel Foy, Ryan Shanks, and Jack Savage kept JSerra scoreless.  Late in the fourth Savage got a JSerra pick.  Servite defeated JSerra 28-0 and prepared for the challenging St. John Bosco team.

The real challenge of the Trinity League was lurking the following week against the tough St. John Bosco squad. The Friars were confident coming into the game with their shutout victory from the week before.  Travis Waller threw and ran for first downs all night but Servite was unable to keep up with the athleticism of St John Bosco. The Braves defeated Servite 39-13 in a very physical match-up. In the first quarter Travis Waller threw to Pau'u for a first down. Travis Waller then ran for another first down. St John Bosco intercepted his next pass and scored on that drive for an early lead. This didn't discourage the eager Friars. Travis Waller went right back to business throwing first down passes to Justice McCree, Tony Brown, and Nicholas Lopiccola to name just a few of his targets. This momentum helped the Friars get a touchdown of their own. The score was tied 7-7 till the end of the second quarter. With seconds left in the half St John Bosco threw a 51-yard bomb down the field for another touchdown. The scoreboard read 20-7 going into the half.  The third quarter was action packed on both ends. The defense made key tackles to keep the Braves from racking up more points. Waller threw more pertinent first downs to lead his team down the field. Servite fumbled the ball to give St John Bosco good field position. The defense held the Braves offense on that drive. Travis Waller then took control of his destiny. After many successful passes Travis Waller ran to the 11-yard-line for the Friars. Manaitovini Pau'u then got the ball in for the Friars. Servite tried for a two-point conversion but couldn't get past the Braves defense. The score was 23-13 with 1:58 left in the third. The Braves then passed for a retaliation touchdown. They weren't finished. They tackled for a safety and passed for one more touchdown before the game was over.

Servite has one game left for the season against rival Mater Dei.  The Monarchs and Servite have a long standing rivalry and in any rival game, all bets are off.  Servite is coming into the match-up 3-6 with one Trinity League win under their belt for the season.  Mater Dei on the other hand is 7-2 with a 3-1 Trinity League record.  On paper Mater Dei should take the win but the Friars are never the team known to give up.  This is their one last chance for the season to at least keep their three year streak flawless against Mater Dei.  The Monarchs are ranked 19th Nationally and 6th in the State.  This will be a tough match-up to say the least but it will be a true chance for the Friars to show what they are made of in this Catholic high school rivalry that will be on display at Angel Stadium this Friday at 7:30pm.

Cross Country News

Cross Country All Levels

Cross country competed in the 46th Annual Orange County Championships at Irvine Park. The young men arrived early and prepared to run in the near perfect California weather. The freshmen team ran first and had a strong showing. Tristen Somerville placed 3rd overall out of 179 racers with a time of 17:14. Erick Garcia, (18:08) Andrew Shyne, (19:03) Alex Holbrooke, (19:03) Bradley Warren, (20:25) and Justin Clark (27:13) were shortly behind. The freshmen competed very well against the many Orange County schools that came to compete.  The Varsity team ran next.  Sasha Romanenko placed 28th overall out of 157 racers with a time of 16:11. Demetrious Lloyd came in a few seconds later with a time of 16:20. After that Michael Lombasso, (16:26) Ryan Viggiano, (16:28) Gared de Guia, (17:01) Noah Marino, (17:14) and Matthew Darling (17:33) came running in.  The sophomore team ran well too. Mickael Romanenko placed 13th overall out of 161 racers with a time of 17:24. Tim Getscher (18:48) and Tyler Valenti (19:19) came in shortly after. The JV race was the last of the day and the sun was starting to heat up the canyon.  Joseph Quezada came in with a time of 18:24. Andrew Parra, (18:47) Roberto Valadez, (19:09) CJ Fuchs, (21:50) Vincent Kennedy, (22:38) and Sumeet Sidhu (23:10) came in shortly after to finish up the day of competitive running.  Cross country then prepared for their Mt. SAC Invitational.

The Mt. SAC cross country course is one the most unique courses around.  The elevation of the hills makes this event more of a hike than a run. The sections of the course have nicknames. The most challenging is appropriately named "Poop-Out Hill," which is not even the final hike along the route.
The freshman team mastered the "Poop Out Hill." Tristen Somerville's sixth place finish (18:06) and Eric Garcia's time of 19:05 helped the Friars take fourth place in the freshman division.  The varsity runners also finished in fourth place with the help of Demetrious Lloyd (16:42) and Sasha Romanenko (16:49) who finished in 20th and 21st place.

The cross country team took a bye and celebrated with the Credo 5K.  The proceeds from the Credo 5K go right back to the cross country programs at Rosary and Servite.  Students, parents, and faculty came out to participate in the 5K in the near perfect California weather.  This was the 12th Annual 5K.  This was a practice course for the cross country team to stay warm on their week off.  Their next race will be the Trinity League Finals, November 2 at 1:00 pm.  This will be at Central Park in Huntington Beach.

This will be their final regularly scheduled meet for the season and playoff implications will come out of how they place in the race as a team and individually.

Fall Player Spotlights

Blake Amaral- Football

He is a great addition to the football program.  He has played football all four years at Servite. He is also the Alexis Prior in the Priory Leadership Program and has two years experience in that rewarding program. He is a seasoned leader and will go on to do great things in college and the rest of his life.  His greatest memories at Servite have been working out and lifting with the team and the camp weeks. His goal for the the Mater Dei game this Friday is to win, finish the season strong,                                  and to execute offensively.

Coach Thomas says, "He is one the hardest working guys on the team and always gives 100% in everything he does.  He listens and always want to improve as an athlete and as a leader.  He isn't afraid to speak up to his peers and teammates and truly embodies what being a Servite football player is all about.  He will go far in life and I am proud he is on our team."

                                                                                                Patrick Harding- Water Polo

He has played water polo all four years, three on varsity and is a dynamic team leader.  He is the go to guy on the team.  Week after week Harding is one of the leaders on offense. His favorite subject is biology.  He is in the Sports Medicine Club and wants to pursue a career in that field as a athletic trainer or physical therapist.  The colleges he is looking at are Santa Clara University, UCSD, UCI, GW, Fordham, and UCSB.  His pre-game tradition is praying before each match.  His biggest strengths is being coachable, willingness to learn, and working hard. The best advice he ever got was from his father who says  "always give it 100% and always do your best to get the job done."

Coach Hassan says, "Patrick has been one of the most improved centers over his time at Servite.  He is a highly coachable athlete who is willing to learn and coach hard.  He has become the backbone of our offense the last two seasons and he will be a huge loss for us next year."

      Sasha Romanenko- Cross Country

Sasha has consistently proven himself all season at the Invitationals and has grown    to be a leader on the team.  At the Orange County Championships he led the  Servite varsity team and placed 28th out of 157 racers with a time of 16:11.  He  placed 21st at the Mt. SAC Invitational with a time of 16:49.  He is a nationally ranked tri-athlete who consistently places in competitions and meets.  This is his first year in cross country at Servite and he uses it as a way to make him a faster athlete.  His goal in triathlons is to win Ohio National Championship.  He is on club teams for cycling and swimming and has been doing triathlons for five years.  He won the Pacific Coast Triathlon and placed second in the Newport Beach Triathlon behind Chris McCormack who is a seasoned world champion and is a two time Ironman winner.  Sasha's ultimate goal for the season is to beat Orange Lutheran tomorrow at the Trinity League Finals and lead his team to CIF.  As for college he would love to attend University of Colorado Springs that has a Elite Triathlon Academy.  Listed below are websites with his times and rankings.

Coach Gibbs says, "He came out in the fall season and been a pleasant surprise.  He has emerged as our number three man this year.  He is a national tri-athlete who we hope takes us to CIF this year."
