Football News
Varisty Football 2-3 record
Servite Football opened up their season against Bishop Amat. Though it was a hard fought battle Servite couldn't get into the game that warm Friday Night. Bishop Amat took the season opener 23-40. The Friars were written off as having a reloading year but in Friar Country no one gives up that easily. They dusted themselves off and got back up to play the challenging Rancho Cucamonga Cougars.
They traveled the distance to play Rancho Cucamonga in record heat. The nationally ranked Cougars had more than they bargained for when Servite played their hearts out and defeated them 24-23.
The following week was a bye and the media was in a frenzy anxiously awaiting their return to the field to play at home against rival Edison High School. The school was in good spirits celebrating their Homecoming against Edison. The defense on both ends wouldn't give up. The score remained 0-0 going into the half. It wasn't until the 3rd quarter that the score changed. Edison got a touchdown bringing the score to 6-0. Though the Friars came close a few times they couldn't get any points on the board. The Chargers won that round and stayed undefeated. The Friars had a full plate and if the preseason wasn't hectic enough they had to prepare to play Bishop Gorman the best team in Nevada and 11th in the nation.
The game was fast paced and going into the half the swift Bishop Gorman tacked 35 points on the board. Servite walked into the lockers heads still held high. They came back out and held the Gaels to one touchdown in the 2nd half. The final score was 42-0. They needed to make some pertinent changes. They played St. Paul the final week of September.
The Friars made the short trip to Santa Fe Springs. This fast paced game started with back-up quarterback Travis Waller and Andrew Moore connecting on the field for a touchdown. The momentum stayed with the Friars when Waller connected again with Charlie Eteaki for another Servite touchdown. This brought the score to 14-0. Servite got another touchdown and field goal before going into the half 24-0. The Friars came out fully charged after the half and went right back to scoring. St. Paul threw an interception. On that drive Senior Jason Fernando who is typically on defense got another touchdown for the Friars to start the 3rd. This brought the score to 31-0. St. Paul attempted a field goal but Servite blocked it. In the 4th the Swordsmen got a touchdown but the extra point was no good. Friar Blake Amaral scored another Servite touchdown to bring the score to 38-6. The Friars ended up winning 38-6 to regain the needed confidence for the start of league play.
Servite breaks into the Trinity League, playing the #2 team in the nation, Santa Margarita, Friday, October 5 at 7:30 pm at Saddleback College. Ticket details will be available next week on the website.
