A Library Love Story
The Central Library Celebration event got even more joyous when Jonathan Moore used the occasion to propose to his girlfriend Amber Garcia. Moore had purchased a Courtyard brick inscribed with the message "Will You Marry Me?" in preparation for the big day. Amber said yes and Jonathan said he hopes others will use the brick by the Library Lobby doors to pop the questions in the future. The response to the "Buy-A-Brick" campaign has been so overwhelming, bricks in the Courtyard are no longer available but bricks along the Trellis Walk and in the Lobby still can be purchased with a tax deductible donation. |

San Diego Celebrates Its New Library
Thousands of San Diegans filled the streets surrounding the new Central Library on Saturday, September 28 to celebrate the dedication of the new home for literacy and learning. Visit here for more coverage of the community celebration.
At the dedication ceremony, the Library's official name was revealed as "San Diego Central Library @ Joan Λ Irwin Jacobs Common" in honor of the Qualcomm founder and wife Joan's generous contributions of $30 million. Their lead gifts inspired more than 3,000 other individuals, corporations and organizations to donate an additional $45 million for the project. In keeping with both the Jacobs' and the new Library's high-tech background, the name is written with "@," a symbol signifying connections, and the inverted V, or "Λ," the mathematical symbol for "and." A common is a traditional New England space to gather, as Dr. Jacobs noted in his dedication remarks. This Library "is going to be a real gathering place for San Diego. I look forward to seeing it filled with people," he said.
"We're overjoyed by San Diegans enthusiasm to support their Library," said Library Foundation CEO Jay Hill. "There still are numerous opportunities to support the Central Library and ensure quality materials, technology and programs for the entire Library system." Hill encouraged interested supporters to visit SupportMyLibrary .org for more information.
Use of the Central Library has soared. Just under 7,000 people toured the Library's ground-floor level on the Celebration Day and an additional 8,000 visited Monday, the first day the Library was fully open. On Monday and Tuesday, 9,000 books and other materials were checked out and more than 1,500 library cards were issued over the Library's first three days. |
One Book Program Underway
Pulitzer Prize winning author Geraldine Brooks addressed an overflow crowd at the new San Diego Central Library @Joan Λ Irwin Jacobs Common on Monday to kick off the seventh One Book, One San Diego community reading program. Brooks is the author of Caleb's Crossing, this year's book selection.
