Public Art Exhibits
We love when public institutions mount exhibits featuring our gallery artists. We know how beautiful and significant the historical pieces at the gallery are, but when museums and public galleries revisit the artists in their collections, they renew the public's appreciation of Canadian art as well. These exhibits also introduce new audiences to the art of past generations.

Today's newsletter highlights some of the current and upcoming exhibits that you may want to check out. And then, of course, visit the Arctic Experience McNaught Gallery for your own private audience with these artists' work.

Jock Macdonald, Etheric Form (1934) in the collection of the VAG
Jock Macdonald

The Vancouver Art Gallery is currently featuring an exhibit called 'Jock Macdonald: Evolving Form.' From the description: Tracing the unique and dramatic transformations the artist underwent throughout his artistic development, the exhibition begins with Macdonald's early painting career in Vancouver, surveys his move toward abstraction in the thirties and his extraordinary automatics of the forties, then concludes with the later abstractions he produced as part of the Toronto-based collective of abstract artists, Painters Eleven."

We will feature Jock Macdonald in a future newsletter. For now visit the Jock Macdonald page on our website to see some of his work.

John Hammond, Suspension Bridge, Saint John (c.1884) in the collection of the NBM
John Hammond

The New Brunwick Museum is hosting an exhibit called 'Forming a Vision: The Art and Geology of the Stonehammer Geopark'.  The exhibit features 20 pieces from the Museum's permanent collection, dating between 1805-2008, that were inspired by the park in southern New Brunswick. Included in the exhibit is a sketch by John Hammond of a suspension bridge (pictured right).

Hammond was known for this sketches of Canada from coast to coast and he was commissioned by the Canadian Pacific Railway to create paintings of Canadian landscapes. His best loved work is of Eastern seascapes and Western pastures.

Check out "Sunset on the Tantramar" by John Hammond at the Arctic Experience McNaught Gallery and read about Hammond in a past newsletter.

Robert Harris

The Confederation Centre for the Arts in Charlottetown, PEI is presenting 'Five Decades: A Canadian Art Collection' featuring selections from Robert Harris. Some of the Centre's most important pieces are Harris' 1883 preparatory sketches for his famous Fathers of Confederation painting, which they accepted in 1965 along with a large body of records from the Robert Harris Trust.
