Herbert Sidney Palmer (1881-1970)
Palmer was born in Toronto and attended the Central Ontario School of Art, where he studied under J.W. Beatty and F.S. Challenger. He devoted his life to promoting the arts in his home city.

As well as being involved in the Ontario Society of Artists and the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, he was a founding member of the Arts and Letters Club - the venue which famously hosted meetings of the Group of Seven.

For almost 40 years he worked with the Canadian National Exhibition's fine arts department.

In 1914 Palmer mounted a major exhibition of Canadian art for the RCA. He traveled across the country arranging for pieces from the top Canadian artists to be sold in support of the Canadian war effort.

He was a prolific painter and his work was well liked by both colleagues and art critics. During his lifetime he exhibited at the Art Gallery of Toronto, The National Gallery of Canada, New York's World Fair and the Tate Gallery in London.

Like pastoral scenes? So did Palmer!

Palmer was well known for his paintings of the Canadian landscape. His most popular and still sought-after works are those featuring livestock like sheep, cattle, horses, and goats.

He was admired for his ability to capture the character of the location he was painting. He loved warm, deep colours and, accordingly, much of his work celebrates the light, hues, and warmth of Canada's summer months.
