Introducing Reta Merkur

Some of our clients have already seen Reta's paintings hanging at the gallery.
These over-sized, colourful pieces make a powerful impression and are perfect for modern homes and offices.

Recently her paintings were sold at a Hamilton charity auction and people were understandably intrigued by her work. We thought it was time to introduce the rest of you to Reta Merkur! So without further ado...

Reta Merkur, abstract artist

Reta Merkur was born in 1920 and grew up in Toronto: her parents from Brooklyn and from Russia. She married Max Merkur, founder of Toronto's Meridian Properties. The two were well known in the art world for their outstanding collection of Canadian paintings, driven by Max's enthusiasm for collecting and Reta's love and knowledge of art.

Reta was an avid and accomplished painter in her own right, inspired by the abstract impressionism of the mid 20th century, especially Jackson Pollock. Her work embodies the energy, inspiration, and vibrancy of Pollock's drip paintings. She was incredibly prolific in her lifetime, amassing a body of work which showcases her love of art and her enthusiasm for painting.

The gallery has a series of paintings from Reta's personal collection. Many of the paintings are painted on large panels and would make impressive statement pieces in a home or office. We also have a selection of smaller pieces that capture the same energy on a reduced scale.
