A friendly reminder from us at the gallery:

Don't forget to change your clocks this weekend!

As we take part in this yearly winter ritual, let's take one last look back at Summer with hyperrealist, Michael French...

Michael French
Michael French's paintings exhibit incredible skill and a mastery of technique. His work is highly sought after by Canadian and international collectors.

French was born in British Columbia in 1951. He was only eighteen when he had his first solo exhibition.

In 1972 French met the great American realist Andrew Wyeth who shared techniques and became a major influence on French's work.

French has produced commissioned works for Brian Mulroney, former American president George Bush Sr., and Prince Charles.

He currently lives in San Miguel de Allende, in Mexico (also the home of two other gallery artists: Gary Slipper and Toller Cranston).

Hyperrealism
Michael's unique style of realism has been called Hyperrealism. He paints real objects and situations, but filters them through an emotional point of view, which dictates his use of colour, composition, and light. He removes extraneous elements and focuses on the nuance of light and shadow. The finished paintings suggest an idealized perfection. There is a air of tranquility and reflection, with a touch of the mysterious.

Inspired by the European Masters, French favours a delicate and time-intensive painting process - layers and layers of thin paint - which produces the lush, luminous hues in his work.
