November/December 2012
Greetings!

Here we are, almost at the end of another school year - and what a year it has been.  The National Year of Reading has certainly put books and reading in the forefront, and given us many opportunities to explore their importance.  It's also given us the chance to take advantage of many programs and events, and we hope the effect of these continue well into the future.

At this time of year schools and kindergartens are beginning to wind down, with many secondary students already finished. As such, this edition of School Scribbles is really a chance to make sure that you are kept informed of new books that are being released in November and December. The lead up to Christmas is when many best-selling titles are released, and we want to make sure you're aware of them so that you can add them to your library once budgets are replenished early next year.

Though the school year is not quite over we have already begun looking towards 2013. Many teachers and librarians begin their planning over the summer break and so in this last School Scribbles newsletter for the year we've included a few sections to keep in mind. Firstly, 2013 will be the International Year of Water Cooperation, a topic many of you may want to include in your curriculum - especially with World Water Day being held in Term 1. (For more details see below.) The 2013 CBCA Book Week theme has also been announced - Read Across the Universe - a theme that will give schools and libraries the chance to really be creative and delve into topics of space and the workings of our universe.

2013 will also be the "year of" a number of other topics that some schools may want to study. It will be the International Year of Quinoa, International Year of Statistics, and the International Year of Mathematics of Planet Earth. (See below for details.)

So as you move toward your end of year celebrations we hope that you enjoy these final weeks, and we thank you for allowing us to be a part of your community.

Happy reading!

Sincerely,
Jenny Baber
School/Library Representative

Name of the Star Shades of London #1 The Name of the Star  by Maureen Johnson P/B $14.99 (9780007398638)
December release. Now available in smaller format.
Thrilling ghost-hunting teen mystery as modern-day London is plagued by a sudden outbreak of brutal murders that mimic the horrific crimes of Jack the Ripper. Sixteen-year-old American girl Rory has just arrived at boarding school in London when a Jack the Ripper copycat-killer begins terrorising the city. All the hallmarks of his infamous murders are frighteningly present, but there are few clues to the killer's identity. "Rippermania" grabs hold of modern-day London, and the police are stumped with few leads and no witnesses. Except one. In an unknown city with few friends to turn to, Rory makes a chilling discovery. Could the copycat murderer really be Jack the Ripper back from the grave?
