President's Corner
By Tuwanda Rush Williams, President
Happy New Year! I hope that you enjoyed the holidays and have begun 2013 in peace and enthusiasm. I am a member of a women's investment club, and we had a wonderful New Year's fellowship last weekend. One of our members suggested that each of us choose one word to motivate our thoughts, behavior, and actions in the year ahead, and we did so. As a full-time government attorney with a husband, a son who is a senior in high school with seemingly endless expenses, senior class activities, and college & scholarship application deadlines, an ambitious eighth grade daughter, and active memberships in several organizations and church ministries, you may surmise that my word is "prioritize" this year! But I also have two other words -" "balance" and "healthy". So, too, I encourage you to select one or two words to embrace and guide your thoughts, behavior, and actions this year! Read more.... |

MEET GWINNETT'S NEW CHIEF MAGISTRATE
Kristina Hammer Blum was first appointed to the Magistrate Court as a part time Magistrate in 2005; she became a full time Magistrate in 2009. In prior years, she practiced law with several different firms including Barnhart, O'Quinn & Williams, Hipes & Norton, and Williams, Morris & Blum (where she was a partner). Although she practiced in a variety of areas, she specialized in the representation of city and county governments and public officials. In fact, she came to the Magistrate Court from the Gwinnett County Law Department where she was a Senior Assistant County Attorney for 7 years. In the Law Department, Judge Blum began her relationship with Magistrate Court as its lawyer, representing and advising the Court on policy issues and in litigated matters. She also served as a Staff Attorney to the Hon. Judge Carla Brown. Off the bench, Judge Blum is an avid SCUBA diver. She has over 250 dives and her favorite hobby is underwater photography. She recently returned from Cocos Island where she dove with hundreds of hammerhead, white tip, black tip and Galapagos sharks. | Judge Blum jumping into shark infested waters! |
She also has an extensive theatre background and actually spent two years as a principal cast member of Second Base Improv Comedy Troupe. She is presently choreographing her daughter's school musical and is her son's Cub Scout Den Leader. She was taking guitar lessons for two years but quit when her family begged her to stop playing "Margaritaville," which is the only song she managed to learn and play competently. Judge Blum is married to love of her life, James Paul Blum, Jr., an attorney with the Cobb County firm of Beloin, Brown & Blum. She has two hilarious and amazing children, Merritt and Corbin, and one deformed American Bulldog, Madison. |

Holiday Party - A
Good Time & Good Cause
The Gwinnett County Bar Association held its annual Holiday Party on December 15, at the Payne Corley House in Duluth. We could not have asked for a more beautiful setting for an evening of fellowship, great food and generosity. This was our second year at the Payne Corley House, which was built in 1870 and is the oldest standing residence in Duluth. Our members and guests were greeted with hors d'oeuvres then invited to stroll through the various rooms of the home which each contained different culinary selections, such as an attended pasta bar, carved turkey, elaborate salads and a desert buffet.
All in attendance were asked to bring a food donation to support the Lawrenceville Cooperative Ministries. As always, our members stepped up and hit this project out of the park. Not only did we load-up a full trunk of food, but our members brought gift cards and made additional cash donations well over what was requested or expected.
On December 21, the Gwinnett County Bar Association presented Lawrenceville Cooperative Ministries with an overflowing grocery cart, a very large stack of grocery gift-cards and a check expressing this association's commitment to our community. We look forward to having an even more successful holiday party in 2013. Click here for photos.... |

Podcasts
by Jorgia Northrup
Audio podcasts are serial presentations of varying length available to download onto your electronic device and listen to at your leisure. I skip the legal ones, since I am looking for a diversion. Apple products can download podcasts directly or through i-Tunes. You can also download many of them from the creator's web site. Also, search "Podcatchers" on the internet for various tools for downloading to various devices. Generally, you can set your device or feed to automatically download new episodes for you as they come out.
Here are some suggestions for this month.

 SEEKING ARTICLES, PHOTOS & CO-PUBLISHER(S) & 'REPORTERS'
We have 'opportunities' for those who would like to be a part of this award-winning publication, and no heavy lifting is involved.
Articles - we really appreciate articles written by local judges and lawyers. This is your newsletter, after all. You get to choose the topics which you think may interest your fellow bar members.
Announcements - we are glad to publish various notices concerning your office.
Photos - are always appreciated. We can help you with uploading.
Co-Publishers - are you interested in graphic design? Or helping to edit the newsletter? We can always use extra talent! A detectable pulse meets threshhold qualifications.
GCBA - Reporter - while these press credentials may not get you into the press box at the Turner Field we need 'reporters' to do regular columns, particularly interview pieces.
If you are interested in being part of the 'newsletter team' please email warren.davis@gwinnettcounty.com and/or Margaret Washburn. |
