Before Breakfast

There really is a secret to success. It's get stuff done before breakfast. Some of it seems to be explained by a fairly recent Florida State psychology professor's finding, that willpower is like a muscle...it gets fatigued and we all need a lot of willpower to be our best throughout the day. Don't stop reading or take it personally if you're not a "morning person." While it's true that 90% of successful execs wake before 6 a.m. on weekdays, those of you who have later clocks just have to "hide" from others to get the "morning effect." I call the "morning effect" the impact of being up and squeezing out as much time as possible before others start to infringe on you doing just what you please. That time when you are on no one's agenda.

So before breakfast you should do the following things: The first two MUST be done every day. The rest are in order of importance.
  1. Scan email for urgent emails only
  2. Plan and strategize the day
  3. Work on a top-priority work project
  4. Exercise
  5. Work on a personal passion
  6. Scan social media for no more than 30 minutes

So back to the science or the "why" getting stuff done before breakfast works. It's all about willpower. And there's no specific time in the day when we have the willpower to tackle what the day will bring us then at the starting line! Just think back to how often at the end of the day we say things like, "I'm too tired to go to the gym." " I'm too tired cook, so I'll just grab something even if it ruins my healthy diet." "I should go to that networking event, but my day got away from me and I better stay late tonight," or some other similar self-statement. Fact is, once the day is underway our willpower gets reduced and we have to fight that much harder to stay with our personal plan. And don't fool yourself, our decision making isn't as sharp later in the day as it is when it's early and we are fresh. I've had a long standing rule in my office, that I prefer to meet with people or work on projects that I refer to as "brainless" late in the afternoon. It doesn't mean that the people or the project don't bring me any value and it certainly isn't meant to degrade, it's just my way of saying "schedule me to do things that don't require me to be at the top of my game."

I can't say that I always follow a great morning routine, but over time I do pretty well. People say to me all the time that it's because I'm a morning person by nature, but I'm not. It's just that by getting up early for so many years, it really is second nature and I enjoy the benefits too much to change. Do you have a morning routine that you're willing to share? Or maybe you'd like to share your thoughts, that mornings just don't work for you and how you manage to be super successful. Love to hear from you.
