Saving Daylight

Hooray for Daylight Saving Time!  I know there are some people who don't like it, but frankly I wish that we would move the clocks by two hours...and I live in Florida. I always like this time of year when debates about the pros and cons of Daylight Saving Time start.  By the way, did you know the practice was first conceived by Ben Franklin? I find it really interesting that we can have conversations about controlling what time the sun rises and sets.  It's like trying to create the perfect day, which is like trying to create the perfect software, the perfect browser, the perfect cloud storage et al. Not possible, but isn't it worth it to try?

So if someone like me can get so excited about Daylight Saving Time, how come it's hard to get excited about how we work?  Is it acceptable for people in business to be excited about the hardware and software tools that they use or are we supposed to have less "sunshine" and just put on our grey outlook and complain about the software we have, while waiting until we get out of the office where we can really enjoy the pleasures of technology tools?  Are people afraid that if they get excited about purchasing hardware and software tools for business they won't be taken seriously?  Or is it we are tired of the hype - you know, companies telling us we should be excited about new technologies and software and then not delivering on the promise?

Maybe things can change. Be better. Like having more daylight when it counts.  Just look at Microsoft's latest  ad for the Surface Pro.  It's a great example of marketers trying to break the mold of "everything business has to be stodgy."  In the most recent ad, the setting is a business meeting that appears to take place entirely in the user's head. The click-clack of his tablet's snap-together keyboard attachment and his stylus create a symphony of catchy taps just before the real dancing starts.  The ad seems to say the team didn't give enough credit to the boss for being cool when he first walked in with his expensive glasses and his dance-proof trench coat. But he showed them, didn't he? What? Bosses can dance? Bosses are cool? Maybe.

There's as much chatter about this ad on line as there is about the pros and cons of Daylight Saving Time this year.  Some people think it's downright stupid.  Some see it as hip and cool.  I see it as bringing some fun into the workplace and that, I believe, is a good thing.  Just because black and grey are easy office attire colors doesn't mean how we work needs to be boring too.  I think we should have hardware and software at work that we enjoy using, just like many of us enjoy Daylight Saving Time.  And on that note, I'm going to go out and buy a new Surface Pro today and I'll bet I can get it done before the sun goes down.
