Waiting for the Right Window?
Clearly, Microsoft is going all out for consumer attention because unless you live in a cave, you've noticed the aggressive advertising campaign for Windows 8, Microsoft Surface RT tablets. It seems that Microsoft is hoping that if enough consumers get ahold of the early version of Surface with a watered down Office Suite they can make headway with businesses with the BYOD- Bring Your Own Device methodology, (not to be confused with BYOB, which you might want to do if you buy one of these). I'm wondering how that strategy will work since we know how much companies large and small "love" to have employees bring new hardware to work and ask the IT group to support it. Hmmm, not so much!
While I'm really upset to have to wait a few more months, I'm going to. In case you'd like some additional info to help you decide for yourself here's my take on things. I'm certain that there are features that should conquer some of the previous tablet limitations of the iPad and Android tablets. We've all been waiting for the Surface because it lets us take everything we use all the time in our offices mobile. And the fact that it has a full sized USB port and a micro SD card, makes me giddy. I can't tell you how frustrating it's been to have neither on my iPad. And another biggie - the power on the Windows Pro is going to be double that of the Surface RT. That's a big deal. So there's a couple of reasons why I think waiting is so important, but the big one is...Windows 8 on the Surface RT is incompatible with legacy Windows apps such as Photoshop, Quicken and even Outlook. Ouch!
Now there are a couple of other things that you'll want to know that might make you unhappy. The Surface Pro is a full ½ pound heavier than both the iPad and the Surface RT.
Word has it the Surface Pro will hit shelves sometime in early 2013 - some predict that will happen in January, but others think it'll be after the Consumers Electronic Show which is January 8-11. Microsoft has been tight-lipped about the cost, but a German retailer Notebook.de leaked the price and was taking pre-orders. The site listed two versions of the Surface Pro, one with a 64GB hard drive priced at about $920 and one with a 128GB hard drive priced at $1026. Not cheap.
I've definitely found I like my iPad more for personal use than business, I find it great for note taking, accessing the internet quickly, email (because we have an Exchange Server) and showing pictures. I want to use tablets for work which is purely business in nature and I can't do what I want on the Surface RT. I've been waiting a long time for the "window to open". So for me and the others in my office I was hoping to bonus with one for the holidays, I'm very disappointed that I have to wait for the other "windows tablet". How about you?
