Environmental Assessment of the Historic Lincoln Train Station Property in Gettysburg, PA

Recently, Pyramid had the opportunity to work with the Gettysburg Foundation and provide them with an environmental assessment of the property containing the Historic Lincoln Train Station, located in Gettysburg, PA.

Lincoln Station was used for a passenger train station from 1858/1859, when the original building was constructed on the subject property, through 1942, when the passenger train service was discontinued. Since 1955, the property has been used as an information center for the Gettysburg Convention & Visitors Bureau (former Gettysburg Tourism Office). It is where Abraham Lincoln arrived for his historic visit to the battlefield and to deliver his famous address, and it was used as a hospital and depot for wounded soldiers after the battle.

Pyramid was chosen to perform the work for the Gettysburg Foundation as a result of our respect in the marketplace, our long-standing relationship with the National Parks Service (who manages the associated Gettysburg National Military Park), and our understanding of the importance of accurate and cost-effective investigations.

ASTM Addresses the Need for Hydraulic
                   Fracturing Standards

The ASTM's is discussing the need and the initiative of a subcommittee to establish standards for hydraulic fracturing.  These standards would come at a crucial time for the country, when hydraulic fracturing is such a topical and highly controversial issue.  Here we attempt to provide you a short summary of the ASTM discussions on the subject.  Please also visit
www.astm.org/standardization for more information.

"Subcommittee D18.26 on Hydraulic Fracturing," is part of ASTM Committee D18 on Soil and Rock.  Hydraulic fracturing provides the potential to maximize the extraction of natural gas and oil within shale formations, which were previously deemed inaccessible.

The following are key ASTM points regarding hydraulic fracturing:
  • Hydraulic fracturing can potentially drive continued growth in clean energy development
  • Shale gas production is projected to grow almost three-fold in the next 2 decades
  • Increases in hydraulic fracturing operations can provide a stimulus to the economy by creating jobs, gross domestic product and tax revenues, and a cost savings through lower gas and electric prices
  • Standards must be developed to ensure the preservation of the environment and safe working conditions

The new subcommittee will attempt to address the balance of fracking growth and opportunity with environmental safety.  Ronald J. Ebelhar, a senior principal at Terracon and chairman of the ASTM Committee D18, was quoted as saying, "The oil and gas industry will achieve a level playing field through the acceptance of best practices that underlay hydraulic fracturing infrastructures and guide critical aspects of business operations.  Regulators  at the federal, state, and local level will be better able to focus on big pictures knowing that basic technical issues are covered by ASTM standards.  And concerns with the general public should be allayed by proven and tested standards that improve industry practices and serve to better protect natural resources."

The proposed standards will address areas such as:

  • Background site investigation and permitting
  • Well installation and borehole integrity testing
  • Engineering and drilling techniques
  • Permanent well abandonment and data reporting
  • Safe management and disposal of drilling fluids
  • Groundwater monitoring and remediation
  • Proper reinjection of produced well fluids

It is sure to be a long process, but the application of ASTM standards to hydraulic fracturing will bring a positive change to the industry, as well as public perception.  As a long term voting member of ASTM, Pyramid will keep you apprised of these issues!
