Water Shortages Segment 2: Pumped Storage Alternatives
This month we bring back our discussion from July regarding North Carolina water supply. As we have discussed, water supply has been an issue of increasing concern throughout the last decade in North Carolina. The addition of water supply wells throughout the state has resulted in documented drawdown of the aquifer, the threat of salt water intrusion in coastal aquifer systems, and more rigorous changes to water supply design and utilization regulations for water wells throughout the state.

As promised, Pyramid will be providing you with more detailed descriptions of various water supply alternatives and conservation methods. This month we address Pumped Storage...
Pumped Storage
Pumped storage provides communities or individual users with an alternative source of water to supply systems that experience seasonal fluctuations in groundwater volume resulting from local/regional drought conditions. The general methodology is as follows:
- The system is designed to pump surface water from a source such as a river into the local aquifer during times when river levels are high and surface water is present in abundance.
- The pumped water is treated both chemically (prior to injection) and naturally (by storing in the local aquifer) to create and preserve high quality water.
- The pumped (stored) water in the aquifer is then utilized during times when groundwater levels would otherwise have been generally low (i.e. drought months).
Pyramid's professional staff have expertise in understanding the specific advantages and disadvantages of the various types of water supply alternatives discussed above. In upcoming months we will continue our discussions of water shortages and alternatives, so stay tuned!
Contact us today to discuss your own water supply issues and choices for alternatives!

GSA Contracts and Pyramid
The United States General Services Administration (GSA) establishes long-term government-wide contracts with commercial firms to provide access to millions of commercial products and services at volume discount pricing. Pyramid received its contract with GSA in 2003. We renewed our contract in 2008, and we are currently in the second five year term. Our contract is for environmental remediation and environmental studies such as National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) investigations, ASTM Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, soil, asbestos and lead paint assessments, and other types of land and property evaluations. Our GSA clients have included the US Department of Homeland Security, the USDA, the Veterans Administration, and the National Parks Service.
The main advantage of the GSA contract is that a federal agency can establish a contract with Pyramid with a minimum of concerns, because the contract is already in place. All contract terms, including personnel and equipment rates, are established and consistent for each customer.
Please contact Pyramid for further information on the advantages of the GSA contract vehicle.
