Diversity and Cultural Awareness: Talking about Differences with Children

An instructional team from Empowering Multicultural Initiatives will present a two-part diversity/cultural awareness workshop for parents that will focus on understanding the unconscious biases that all of us hold. Discover the impact of our multiple group memberships in gender, race, age, sexual orientation, physical ability, country of origin, and class. This two-part workshop is free but space is limited. March Exhibits & Displays

Jenny Schneider, Wellesley artist and illustrator, is inspired by her children, nature, yoga and all that is beautiful around us. She uses watercolors and collage for her illustrations and acrylics for larger pieces. An artist's reception will be held in the Wakelin Room on Saturday, March 1, from 9 AM to Noon.
Lobby Exhibit Joyce Goodman - Landscapes and Abstracts Goodman says, "My intention is to bring beauty, excitement and nostalgia to the viewers through vivid colors, well thought-out compositions, and a fine balance of negative and positive shapes."

Creating Innovators with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)
|
I n support of the Wellesley Science and Technology EXPO, WFL librarians have prepared a display on the 1st floor of the Main Library. Borrow items on a variety of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math topics, and pick up a complimentary reading list. The display includes copies of the book chosen for community discussion: Creating Innovators: The Making of Young People Who Will Change the World by Tony Wagner.
A presentation and discussion, Innovations in STEM Education will be held on Wednesday, March 19 at 7:30 PM in the Main Library's Wakelin Room. Come learn about and discuss leading-edge approaches to STEM education with Wellesley Public Schools Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Dean Blase, and Olin College Associate Professor of the History of Science and Technology, Robert Martello. Free and open to the public.
A related STEM display can be found in two exhibit cases on the first floor of the Main Library. Additionally, a Scratch Programming Lab suitable for ages 8 and up will be held in the Main Library's computer lab on Friday March 28 from 4:30 - 6 pm.

Why are we so excited? Beginning this month, Wellesley Free Library Card holders will have access to thousands of movies, television shows, music albums and audiobooks -- all available for mobile and online access -- through hoopla. Wellesley Free Library Foundation Receives a $50K Grant from Wellesley Media Corporation

The Wellesley Free Library and Wellesley Media Corporation have joined forces to provide access to Apple computer equipment and an expanded roster of computer classes in the Jackie's Room Computer Lab. Classes will include introductory and advanced instruction in video editing on Apple devices like Macbook Pro and iPads, using software such as iMovie, Final Cut Pro X and Garage Band. NEW! CLASSIC MOVIE NIGHTS

Join fellow movie lovers this spring for a series of three classic cinema screenings at the Main Library. Each night includes light refreshments, and an introduction to the actors and cinematography featured in the film. If you like, stay for an optional discussion after the movie. Wellesley resident and classic film enthusiast John Maconga teamed up with Robert Gerst, Professor and Chair of the Liberal Arts Department at the Massachusetts College of Art & Design to select the films and host these programs
Tuesday, March 25th: "I Know Where I'm Going!" a 1945 romance film by the British-based filmmakers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. It stars Wendy Hiller and Roger Livesey, and features Pamela Brown, Finlay Currie and Petula Clark.
Thursday, April 24th: "Gigi" (1958) A musical romantic comedy film directed by Vincente Minnelli, starring Leslie Caron, Louis Jourdan, Maurice Chevalier and Hermione Gingold.
Wednesday, May 21st: "Scarface" (also known as "Scarface: The Shame of the Nation" and "The Shame of a Nation") a 1932 American gangster film starring Paul Muni, and directed by Howard Hawks and Richard Rosson.
