Dear Newsletter Buddies, I'm writing to you for a couple of reasons that I think you might want to know about Montel Show
First, if you haven't heard, tomorrow's Montel Show
(Thursday, April 12th) is called "War...the Children left
Behind" and interviews the children of 4 families with
unique situations when parents are deployed. It was
really interesting, and I know this because I was there!
I'm actually honored to have been included on the
program for about a minute and a half at the very end.
So if you get a chance to watch or tape it, you should
find it interesting. If you don't know what time or
network it is on in your area, click on this link for help:

Independent film needs your story
Secondly, This is something really fun! A filmmaker
with
an independent film company is making a wonderful
documentary about the amazing families behind our
service members. She has good backing for this
project and is looking to travel around the country
talking with families...hopefully YOU! I've talked with
her a number of times and strongly feel that her
project is reputable, but of course you can judge for
yourselves. She sent me a letter for you to read that
explains the project and how you can be a part of it.
Immediately, she is looking for families in
California,
so if that's you, please pay special attention. I'm
printing it below and it should answer most of your
questions. Even if you're "just a bit" intrigued by the
documentary, email her or call her...she's an absolute
delight! Let's help her make her film a
success...together! Here's her letter:
My name is Suzanne Mejean. I am an independent documentary filmmaker and photographer. I first heard about Flat-Daddies this January when I was searching the Internet for more information on how military families were coping with and supporting the deployment of their loved ones. When I found Elaine Dumler's book, I'm Already Home...Again, I knew I had located someone that shared my very concerns. The Flat-Daddy offers an innovative method for coping with absent family members in the services. Staying exposed to a loved one's image has proven to be psychologically beneficial for kids and the entire family. Flat-Daddies not only support the psychological development of children growing up during a parent's tour of duty but are a popular choice for those who want to keep the image of a spouse (be it mom or dad) available on a day-to-day basis. Flat-Daddies provide a support system that functions in both directions: a positive outlook for that family member deployed while also keeping the family strong, together. Because I feel so strongly about this subject, I've launched into a film project all about what is happening on the home front, particularly focusing on military families employing creative and innovative support systems. I'd like your help with getting as many individual accounts as possible recorded because this can only make the film stronger and inform a wider audience. I see the project as a collaboration between myself and the many people I put on film; I want your input on the situation first and foremost. I am most interested in filming right here at home in California with families who can share and express their individual experiences so that we might better understand both our common and unique values. We can all learn from YOU. I have learned so much already from military families, confirming for me that this is a film that wants to be made. I hope to make an effective film that focuses on individual experiences and how military families maintain and support each other. I come from a fine art background with an interest in making not only an effective film but also a beautiful one. I have the appropriate equipment to work alone as to not cause any invasive interrogatory feelings in my subjects, which the media often has the tendency to evoke. I am currently based in Los Angeles. I will be in New York City (and willing to travel in the Tri-State area) for the last week of March. And between the months of May and September I will be traveling around the country filming with families who have already expressed a desire to be a part of this documentary. I would love to make contact with more families as this can only make the effort stronger. I'm hoping that you'd consider being one of the families I can interview as part of this film project. Please feel free to contact me via email or phone any time and I can tell you more about what I'm looking for, and how you can be a part.
Thank you and best regards,
Thanks again to all of you for helping both Suzanne and myself continue to be vehicles for support to your entire families. You're all the best, and have a wonderful week! Blessings, Elaine Dumler
