Greetings!

Spring is a busy time at LMC, with a number of large end-of-year events leading up to graduation and an assortment of smaller events and activities, as well. There's bound to be something for you in this month's e-News.
Important Dates  
  • April 15 ---- Last day to submit an early Fall 2013 graduation application in order to receive an early registration appointment for Fall 2013; policy  and application   
  • April 18 ---- Last day to withdraw from a full-semester class with a "W" appearing on transcript.    
  • April 29 ---- Begin Fall 2013 priority registration on WebAdvisor for EOPS, DSPS, qualified veterans and foster youth
  • May 1 ---- Special Fall 2013 registration on WebAdvisor for DSPS notetakers, early graduation applicants and qualified athletes
  • May 2 ---- Begin Fall 2013 registration for continuing students on WebAdvisor by appointment     
Admissions Reminders

The best way to assure that you get the classes you need is to register on your priority registration date. Priority registration dates for Summer and Fall 2013 are now posted on WebAdvisor.  Registration for summer session began this week and fall semester registration starts soon, so check InSite/WebAdvisor today for your priority registration date.

Spring 2013 Graduation
 

If you applied for Spring 2013 graduation you will receive notification of your status around April 15 to your InSite email account. If your status is "approved" or "pending", you will receive an invitation to participate in the commencement ceremony around May 1.  

 

If you wish to use the new 2013-14 GE requirements and participate in 2013 Commencement

The new General Education requirements are not effective until summer 2013 when the new catalog comes out. If you are done with your requirements for your degree and wish to use the new GE pattern and participate in the 2013 commencement ceremony, you may file an Application for Graduation AND an Application to Walk in Ceremony with Coursework Remaining. These forms must be filed by April 19. Your degree will be posted in summer.

 

If you missed the March 1 Spring 2013 graduation application deadline

If you did not apply for graduation before the deadline OR you are completing your classes in summer 2013, and you wish to participate in the 2013 commencement ceremony, you may file an Application for Graduation AND an Application to Walk in Ceremony with Coursework Remaining. 2013 Commencement

Information about the commencement ceremony will be on the website shortly. If you completed your degrees and certificates in Summer 2012 or Fall 2012, or if  your application is "approved" or "pending" for Spring 2013, or if you have submitted an Application to Walk in Ceremony with Coursework Remaining for Summer 2013, you will be invited to participate in the ceremony.

Assessment Testing 

Assessment testing at the LMC Brentwood Center begins in early April and continues through the Summer and Fall registration periods.  Testing is by appointment only. Information, hours and appointments

 

Student Services Available at Brentwood Center  

Academic Counseling, CSU East Bay Advising, and Financial Aid appointments are available at the Brentwood Center.  Visit the Brentwood Center or call (925) 513-1625 to schedule an appointment soon.

Scholarship News

 

LMC Brentwood Center Scholarship  

Applications for the LMC Brentwood Center Scholarship are now being accepted from continuing LMC Brentwood Center students.  The $500 award can be used for Summer and/or Fall fees and/or books.  Students must be currently enrolled in at least 6 units at the Brentwood Center and plan to enroll in Brentwood classes next summer or fall. Thermo Scientific Pierce Scholarship

Thermo Fisher Scientific is offering science scholars an opportunity to win up to $10,000 in scholarship funding for the 2013-2014 Fall semester. Two $10,000 and four $5,000 scholarships will be awarded. The application deadline is July 31. More information and the online application are available on the Thermo Fisher Scientific website.  

 

LMC Rotaract Scholarship

This $250 award is for students with a strong commitment and service to their community.  Priority will be given to Rotaract club members. 

The deadline to apply is April 30, 2013. More information and application 

Student Life News & Events

Bay Adventures: Alvin Alley American Dance Theater

Join other LMC students on Friday, April 26 for a fun trip to see the Alvin Alley American Dance Theater in Berkeley. Cost is $15 and includes transportation and admission. Space is limited and you must sign up in advance to attend. Applications are available in the Student Life Office or on Student Life Activities & Events.

 

Advisor Appreciation Ceremony 

LMC student clubs will honor their advisors at the Advisor Appreciation Ceremony on Wednesday, March 8 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Library Community Room (L109). If your club wants to take advantage of this great opportunity to show appreciation to your advisor for their dedication, support and involvement in student clubs this academic year, contact Ashley Adams at

 

8th Annual LMC Academic Competition

The LMC Academic Competition is a fun and interactive way for students to compete for scholarships and is designed to motivate students to achieve scholarly excellence.This year's Academic Competition will be held on Saturday, April 13 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Library Community Room, L109.  

 

The competition consists of four rounds of multiple-choice test questions. All test questions are provided by LMC professors. Each test round is 60 minutes and test answers are scored immediately after each round. Points are awarded for correct answers and the teams with the most points at the end of all test rounds are the winners. The winners of the competition are announced at the end of the event.  

 

The registration deadline is Thursday,  April 4. Applications are available at the Student Life Office and on the  LMCAS Activities webpage.

 

STELAR Awards Ceremony
The Office of Student Life is happy to announce its Annual STELAR Leadership Awards Ceremony to be held on Friday, May 10 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. in the Outdoor Quad. This program is an opportunity to recognize outstanding LMC student leaders and clubs. As a student, you can nominate other students or even yourself! Nomination form 

 

Student clubs and leaders will be acknowledged and awarded for their positive contributions to LMC through their execution of projects and programs, commitment to growth, and their embodiment of the spirit of leadership.  Recipients of the annual awards will receive a framed award and have their name engraved on our perpetual plaques. 

 

LMC Student Government Meetings
The Los Medanos College Associated Students (LMCAS) is the official student government at LMC. Their primary purpose is to advance the welfare of all students. Weekly meetings are held on Mondays from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in L105.

 

Inter-Club Council Meetings

Inter-Club Council meetings are held on Mondays from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in L106.  ICC is the coordinating body for all clubs and organizations on campus. Each club may be represented on ICC, which promotes engagement in community college activities. If your club is a member of ICC, it is imperative that your ICC Representative attend the meetings on a regular basis.  

Debate Team Events

Security vs. Access: The Future of Guns in America
On Wednesday, April 10th, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Pittsburg City Hall, the LMC Debate Team will debate the topic Security vs. Access: The Future of Guns in America.

Professor David Zimny will present pre-debate information to outline the gun control measures proposed by President Obama that have yet to be implemented by Congress, and will set the stage for the debate.

 

Refreshments will be provided in the lobby area after the debate.  All are welcome ---- please spread the word! 

 

LMC Communication Majors Faire

Think you might be interested in a career in the communication field? On Tuesday April 16th, the Communication Department at LMC will sponsor the first ever LMC Communication Majors Faire from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Community Room (L109).

The program will include a brief overview of the degree requirements for Communication Department programs, faculty appearances, class overviews, common fields of employment, a panel of professionals who will share their experiences working in the field, networking and a discussion of transfer programs at local institutions. There will also be a brief panel discussion by students majoring in communication, students on the debate team and Experience staff.
