New York - December 17, 2013: On Christmas Eve, guests of New York's High Line Hotel will receive a copy of Clement Clarke Moore's legendary 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. As the hotel's Tenth Avenue gas lamps are lit at dusk, the legendary book will be placed on beds throughout the 60-room-and-suite hotel during nightly 'turn-down' service.
Opened in May 2013, The High Line Hotel is located within the landmark red-brick headquarters of the General Theological Seminary at Tenth Avenue and 20th street in Manhattan.
The 'turn-down' gift recalls that it was Clement Clarke Moore who, in 1821, donated 66 tracts of land from his family's "country estate" - known as 'Chelsea' - to the Episcopal Diocese of New York for its seminary. Moore went on to become a Professor of Divinity and it was during the seminary's early years that he was credited with penning the Christmas poem, A Visit From St. Nicholas. Nowadays known more generally by its first line, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, Moore's poem became the genesis of the image of Santa Claus the world knows today.
The High Line Hotel is located adjacent to the iconic High Line "railroad-line park," dozens of restaurants, clubs and the city's hippest art gallery neighborhood. Behind the hotel, the secluded gardens and additional 19th-century buildings continue to function quietly as a seminary of the Episcopal Church. In order to match the new hotel with its historic surroundings, design firm Roman and Williams was commissioned to undertake a massive scouring of stores, barns, warehouses and flea markets up and down the East Coast. The result is "collegiate gothic," with every room, suite, corridor and public space furnished with Victorian or Edwardian antiques, period art, Tiffany-style lamps, rewired 1920's dial telephones and a vast collection of authentic Oriental carpets.
