WORD OF THE WEEK--INVENTOR
In the on-line thesaurus one of the synonyms for inventor is pioneer. Assuming that by now you realize we all make it up each day as we go along, this means you are one of that breed. We have never known, nor will we ever know, what is lurking - or waiting happily, filled with glad tidings - just around the corner. With this as the basic truth, do you realize we are asked in any given day to perform improvisational routines equal to the greatest stand-up comic and world-class tap dancer? We exist in a constant state of deciding. Is Choice A going to work better than Choice B? How can we possibly know? So we guess, we venture forth, usually with too little information, into the unknown Next Moment like explorers who've heard the world is round and want to see for themselves. The time for judging ourselves as timid or unadventurous is over. Here on planet Earth, itself a hurtling orb that ferries us about the galaxy and beyond, we ARE pioneers, of our own lives. Every one of us who suits up and shows up in any fashion - pajamas count, so do bare feet and bed hair - has volunteered for today's mystery assignments and you know without my saying it that there will be at least one unexpected, unidentifiable life form on your plate du jour. In our responses to life's demands, we range from MacGyver - yes, I fixed it with a paper clip and duct tape - to Martha Stewart - yes, I substituted spinach - to Henry Kissinger - yes, we found a way to let everyone win. We are more flexible than we ever dreamed, more innovative, more resilient. In lieu of a much-deserved bonus, I hope a standing ovation will be sufficient recognition of your inventor status. Well done, all, well done.
