Do You Give Your Best Performance at Every Show?

Recently my wife and I went in to New York City for a Sunday afternoon Broadway show matinee and dinner. We picked up tickets for Disney's production of "Newsies".  The show was great and the dinner we had in a small off the beaten path Italian restaurant was equally memorable. But this morning I want to talk to you about the show, specifically the performers.

Now, I'm no theater critic but the set, the music, the singing, and the dancing were all excellent and confirmed by the audience who spontaneously, at the end of the show, gave the performers what seemed to be a longer than usual standing ovation.

So, I got to thinking of the practice and hard work that each performer goes through to prepare them for each show. And while the physical preparation is demanding, I can only imagine the mental and emotional conditioning they put themselves through as part of their preparation. They leave nothing to chance; every move and verse is planned and there is no winging it. Lou Carnesecca, the legendary basketball coach at St. John's University here in New York, once said, "Nothing takes place on the court, that doesn't take place in practice first."

For each performer, all of this preparation and hard work has one goal: to position them to give their very best at each performance each and every day they step on to that stage in front of a live audience. Plus, all of this hard work gives them an important edge: if something goes wrong during their performance, they are skilled enough to respond quickly and get right back into their groove, without the audience ever noticing it.

So here's the lesson...What are you doing on a consistent basis to prepare and position yourself and your team to give your very best performance consistently every day with your customers/clients? This preparation and practice should address the tasks as well as the mental stamina needed to give your audience (customers and clients) a reason to give you a standing ovation in the form of testimonials, repeat business, and quality referrals.

Forget about all of the bumper sticker slogans of giving 110% - you only have 100%! But, make certain that you give that 100% in the very best way you can on a consistent basis. That's really all your customers/clients really want.  So ask yourself, do you have the systems and discipline in place to practice and prepare for each day's performance? To position you and your team to do your very best? Think about it; don't leave your success to chance.

"Practice doesn't make you perfect; we're human and make mistakes. Practice (and preparation) gives you the edge to give your best effort on a consistent basis.
