Q. We moved into a new home and our entry needs help. Even though there is a large arched window over the door and a travertine floor, it feels sterile and cold. What do you suggest to make it feel more warm and welcoming?
A. Remember the saying "You never get a second chance to make a great first impression"? Your entry is the very embodiment of that time-tested adage. It's possible to create an entry that almost takes your breath away with dramatic beauty.
Color Me Beautiful
Your entry's main color sets the mood for the rest of your home. If you love color, it's the perfect place to use richer, more saturated hues for your walls. Take the dominant color from a room nearby and turn up the volume a notch or two. Or choose a lighter or darker shade of an accent color in an adjacent room as your main wall color.
 Light Check, Please
Need more light? The difference a new chandelier can make is amazing. Scale and proportion are really important here. If you have a two story foyer, choose a chandelier with two tiers of lights. Dress it up with beaded silk lampshades. Add a ceiling medallion. One of the best lighting tricks is to install a dimmer switch. You control the mood. And always have a secondary lighting source in your foyer such as one or two buffet lamps placed on a console table. Illuminate a dark corner with an uplight hidden behind a tall airy palm nestled in a jardinière.
Give Your Guests a Soft Landing
Travertine is a beautiful natural flooring material and even though you may be hesitant to cover it up, you'll gain the the warmth you're seeking by adding a fabulous area rug. It's a key design element often overlooked. Whether you choose a simple or intricate design, bring in colors found in the rest of your home. Be sure to match the dimensions of your rug to the size of your entry. Still not sure? It's smart to call on Interior Reflections' talent to choose the perfect shape, pattern and color. Our area rug portfolio includes more than 6,000 rugs in 21 sizes and every imaginable color under the sun. And remember, we offer the full line of exceptional Karastan area rugs. Your investment is secure as every Karastan rug is covered by a 20 year warranty.
Dramatically Enlarge A Small Entry
Use the magic of mirrors to bring new life to your entry. Maximize the light from your arched window with a sophisticated floor to ceiling mirror. No room for a mirror that large? Consider mirroring french doors leading from your entry to your dining room or study. Depending on how your door is positioned, it may multiply a gorgeous view of the outdoors.
If you already have an entry mirror, make sure it is paired with a wonderful table. Even a small entry usually has the space for a demilune (half moon) table placed below a great mirror.
Design With Classic Accessories
The mantra "less is more" really applies here. A common mistake is to fill up entry walls and tabletops with itty bitty accessories. Do an honest appraisal of your accessories. Go bold. Live large. Create a focal point by displaying a grand piece of art. Adorn your wall with a rich tapestry. Express yourself using floor and tabletop easels to display art and photos. Bring nature inside with a lush man go tree that looks so realistic, you have to touch it. A large crystal compote placed on any foyer furniture piece looks fascinating as well.

The Unsung Hero Of Many Furniture Plans

Enter the bench! Its elegant lines and slender form allow it to fit into any nook or cranny in your room.
Pushed up against a wall or underneath a windowsill - even as a room divider in a long rectangular space - the bench fits discreetly into most living areas.
It can add character, color, sculpture, and perhaps most importantly, extra seating without overwhelming a space.
Ready and waiting when the inevitable moment arises when you've got to squeeze in eight guests at a table for six, the bench is an important piece to have in your home's furniture tool box.
Stationed along a long wall in the foyer, the bench serves as a place to take off your shoes and put down your purse. It's the perfect foot-of-the-bed piece to give a bedroom a more layered, finished
look.
Vanity benches for the bath are all the rage and rightly so. They are a wonderful place to introduce color, pattern and texture in what may otherwise be a neutral space.
Our benches are fashionably versatile, regardless of style. Whether traditional, mid-century modern or anything in between. Interior Reflections will find the perfect bench for you!
