Boston University
School of Medicine Alumni Newsletter
September 2014

Greetings!

As the summer winds down and the faculty and students return in force for another academic year, we are happy to provide you a snap shot of BUSM activities.

First of all, thanks to all of you, alumni support alone totaled more than $3.1 million this past year. Thank-you!  A new, state-of-the art testing center was recently unveiled on the 11th floor of the Alumni Medical Library.  It is among the first of its kind and will serve to both facilitate the administration of exams while at the same time enhance the quality of much-needed study space for students. The Talbot Green has been transformed into an area for recreation, meals, and outdoor studying. For students who want to exercise, play sports, plant, grow or harvest, the Medical Student Residence field and gardens are open to all BUSM students. Students recently announced that there were an abundance of fresh vegetables and herbs ready to be harvested.

We also celebrate the achievement of fellow BUSM alumnus, Howard Bauchner MED 79, who has been selected to receive a Boston University Alumnus Award. This award is the highest honor bestowed on alumni by the Boston University Alumni Association.  Dr. Bauchner served as a BUSM faculty member of pediatrics and community health sciences on the medical campus for more than 30 years.  In July 2011 he was named the 16th editor-in-chief of Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).  We invite you to attend the Awards Luncheon and Ceremony on Saturday, September 20, 12 pm - 2 pm in the GSU Metcalf Ballroom on the Charles River Campus, 775 Commonwealth Avenue.

In a few weeks, medical student volunteers will call alumni during our Phonathons. If you receive a phone call, ask about their experiences at BUSM-much different than when I was a medical student-and share yours with them! They are eager to connect with alumni and the Phonathons provide them a wonderful opportunity to speak with you.

We also invite you to Join us on October 2 on the Taj rooftop terrace for our fourth annual evening of conversation with our recent-graduates and future leaders. The Annual Dean's Club Dinner will be held on October 25, also at The Taj, where we personally thank donors who made a gift of $1,500 or more in the last fiscal year. I invite you to join this group of BUSM alums.

We look forward to the challenges ahead this academic year.As a graduate and member of the BUSM family, you are a stakeholder in this success.  Please visit us in person or online anytime.  You are always welcome!
