Dear Colleague,
The month of June marks the close of our fiscal year, and I am happy to report that, to date, contributions from medical school alumni total more than $2.4 million. Additionally, we were recently notified that the late Frank Gazzaniga '59 and his wife gave a $1.3 million bequest to create an endowed scholarship at the School. I cannot emphasize enough how important this is for BUSM students. Scholarship dollars are critical. With the student residence complete and thriving, Dean Antman will continue to direct all unrestricted annual fund dollars to scholarship this year. Gifts made by June 30 will be included!
The end of spring and onset of summer brings an added buzz to the medical campus. In May, we celebrated alumni and student milestones with the added energy that visiting guests bring to the campus. Alumni returned for their milestone Reunions during Alumni Weekend, and medical students transitioned to the next phase of their education during Orientation Week and Commencement. As part of third -year orientation, we collaborated with the Office of Enrichment to host the third-annual Student Clinician Ceremony. The ceremony opened with a brief introductory video by the Gold Humanism Honor Society followed by a discussion in which several panelists, including two recent graduates, (Veronica Santini MED 09 and Kate Daniello MED 10) provided insight and their experience transitioning to the wards.
Faculty and staff joined us in extending a warm welcome to visitors and returning alumni, including June Jackson Christmas MED 49, celebrating her 65th Reunion, Howard Bauchner MED 79, editor-in-chief of JAMA (Journal of American Medical Association, who presented Alumni Weekend Grand Rounds and James Brust, MED 68, whose lecture on the early history of BUSM has becoming an annual tradition. We also recognized three distinguished alumni during the Annual Meeting and Banquet.
Students have been busy and find creative outlets to help ease the stress. The BUSM Historical Society published Volume II their Journal of the Boston University School of Medicine Historical Society. The student Creative Arts Society published Whorl and a group of students' interest in journalism launched The Beat. Dean Antman joined students to plant vegetables in the Student Residence garden.
As always, I encourage you to explore the changes taking place in the medical school and on campus, whether virtually or in person. And please stop by the Alumni Office to say hello. The alumni team welcomes visitors!
Warm regards,
