LUT joins ODOT, Metro and Sasquatch in crosswalk education
To help everyone get to where they are going safely, Washington County Department of Land Use & Transportation is promoting ODOT and Metro's educational campaign "Every Crosswalk is an Intersection." The campaign includes a video, reminding drivers to be alert and watch for pedestrians who are crossing streets. Sasquatch is among those making an appearance in the video, which focuses on Oregon's unique crosswalk law and how to cross safely. Under Oregon law (811.028):
- Every intersection is a legal crosswalk. When driving, you must stop for people showing intent to cross the street at a marked or unmarked crosswalk or at a marked mid-block crosswalk.
- When walking, you have the right of way at marked and unmarked intersections and mid-block crosswalks when you signal intent to cross. Intent is shown by extending your hand, foot, wheelchair, cane, crutch or bicycle into the roadway. For your safety, make sure vehicles moving in all lanes and in both directions have stopped before proceeding.
The number of pedestrian fatalities in Oregon is 50 percent higher in 2015 than in 2014. On average, 798 Oregon pedestrians are injured or killed by people driving vehicles each year. For more information visit: www.walkbikeroll.org or www.oregoniancrossing.org. Webpage

NOTE: These meetings are for proposed developments in the unincorporated portions of the County (outside cities) only. For information on development within a city, please contact the city. This information is provided as a courtesy only. Developers are required to hold Neighborhood Meetings prior to submitting certain land use applications to Washington County. A developer may also choose to hold such a meeting voluntarily if it is not required by county code. These meetings are intended to serve as a forum for the developer, affected CPOs (Citizen Participation Organizations), and property owners within the required notification buffer (500 feet in urban areas; 1,000 feet in rural areas) to discuss the proposal prior to the developer submitting an application to the county.
