Farmington Road Groundbreaking digs up some excitement

The Farmington Road improvement project groundbreaking was held on Monday, June 1, complete with ceremonial golden shovels and a 315 Cat Excavator. Beaverton Mayor Denny Doyle (far left), County Board Chair Andy Duyck, District 1 County Commissioner Dick Schouten, and Beaverton Position 1 Councilor Lacey Beaty were on hand to throw shovels of dirt for the cameras. Mayor Doyle also hopped in the excavator and dug up a few scoops of dirt - including an abandoned plumbing pipe!

The Farmington Road improvements are a joint project between Washington County and the City of Beaverton. The improvements include a center turn lane, continuous bicycle and pedestrian facilities, street lighting and utility upgrades between Murray Boulevard and Hocken Avenue. The project also includes realigning 141st Avenue with 142nd Avenue at Farmington Road.

Travelers should expect delays or use alternate routes for the duration of the project. TV Highway is the suggested alternate route for through traffic, including truck traffic. Construction will occur between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, with lane restrictions from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day, when flaggers will move traffic through the work zone. Occasionally, work may also occur on Saturdays during daytime hours as needed.

Menlo Drive and 2nd Street will be closed at Farmington Road for eight weeks during the replacement of the Erickson Creek culvert. The closure is anticipated to begin mid- to late-June. Both roads will reopen to traffic in August. Traffic on Menlo and 2nd will be detoured to Erickson Avenue (detour map). Farmington Road will remain open during the side street closures.

Recreational marijuana regulation discussion June 9

Potential options for the regulation of recreational marijuana will be discussed during the June 9 Board Work Session. It is recommended that the Board clarify how marijuana land use applications should be submitted. The state Liquor Control Commission is developing statewide regulations for retail sales, production, processing and wholesaling of marijuana, but final rulemaking is not expected until the end of the year. Staff recommends that land use ordinances be filed in 2016, when rulemaking is complete.  www.co.washington.or.us/lut/planningprojects/medical-marijuana.cfm
