Free Shred Day June 11
Do you have a lot of old bills and documents you want to get rid of? Clermont County Records Center will host a Free Community Shred Day from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, June 11. It will be held in the parking lot of the Department of Job and Family Services, 2400 Clermont Center Drive. Come on by and give us your paper!

Summer camps at county parks


Get your kids off their phones and into outdoor adventures! The Clermont County Park District is offering several camps this summer for kids from pre-school through 13-year-olds. Whether it's the pre-K Storytime Session at Sycamore Park or Outdoor Survival Camp at Chilo Lock #34 Park, our naturalists will keep your children engaged in healthy -- and fun -- activities.

Yoga outside
Free Yoga in the Park on Saturdays

If yoga positions such as Up Dog and Cobra intrigue but intimidate you, this may be a good summer to try Yoga in the Park! Free classes will be held every Saturday morning in the summer from 9-10:15 a.m. at Shor Park. Certified instructors from East Cincy Yoga will guide you through yoga poses as you breathe in the fresh air. Read more here.

Butterfly Count: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, June 11. Meet at the Army Corps Visitor Center, 2185 Slade Road, Batavia, to spend a few hours searching for nature's solar-powered flying flowers. We plan to visit East Fork State Park, Cincinnati Nature Center and nearby county parks in search of hairstreaks, admirals and monarchs, oh my!  Cost is $3 to help defray expenses. Call 513-797-6081 for more information and to register.

Nocturnal Night Hikes: Now that our Spring Wildflower Walk series has come to a close, it's time to explore the forest under a different sky and see what creatures rule the night. Activities, stories, games and just plain fun are all included on these family friendly hikes. Read more here.

Chilo Canoe Day: You "otter" join Clermont County Park District's Naturalists at 9:30 a.m. on  Saturday, July 23,for a guided canoe trip through Crooked Run Nature Preserve and the Ohio River. Learn about the local history of Chilo, wildlife and habitats as we journey. Lunch will be provided shortly after noon at Chilo Lock #34 Park. Reservations are required. Welcome back, Commissioner Humphrey

We were delighted to welcome back Commissioner Ed Humphrey full time to Clermont County in the past month. Commissioner Humphrey, at right, had a serious automobile accident last December, and has worked hard to recover. He's now back attending session and taking care of other responsibilities. $9M in water capital projects in 2016
The Clermont County Water Resources Department plans to construct more than $9 million in capital projects for 2016. These include:

* Replacement of 9,440 feet of water main in Goshen Township; $2.1 million
* Installation of 3,200 feet of sewers, manholes and laterals in Miami Township, $1.1 million
* Improvements to booster pump stations in Miami Township, $420,250
* Replacing 3,900 feet of water main in Miami Township, $558,600
* Replacing 7,270 feet of sanitary sewers in Tate Township, $1.7 million
* Improvements in lift stations in Union and Pierce Townships, $817,440
* Rehabilitating 21,247 feet of sewer main and other rehab work in Union and Batavia Townships, $2.9 million.

School immunization clinics in July
Yeah, we know that school just got out .... but the start of the school year has a way of catching up on you. Clermont County Public Health offers all required school immunizations. New for the 2016-17 school year is a requirement that all students entering seventh grade must have one dose of MCV4 (meningococcal vaccine). Students entering twelfth grade must have a booster dose of the vaccine. Our back-to-school clinics will be held 1-3 p.m. July 14 and 3-6:15 p.m. July 20.

Call Clermont County Public Health at 513-735-8400 to schedule your immunization appointment. Immunization clinics will take place at the Nursing Division of Clermont County Public Health, 2400 Clermont Center Drive.

When thunder roars, go indoors!

Spring and summertime set the stage for severe weather in Clermont County. Here are some tips about lightning that everyone should know and share:

* No place outside is safe when thunderstorms are near.

* If you can hear thunder, you can be struck by lightning.

* Stay away from windows and doors during thunderstorms.

LONGTIME TITLE WORKER RETIRES: Many of you may recognize Shirley Williamson, Supervisor of the Title Department for the Clerk of Courts in Batavia. She recently retired after working 40 years for Clermont County -- with the Title Department the whole time. "I've loved working with the county," Shirley said. "I worked at the counter for 25 years, and I got great satisfaction from helping people. People come in today and say 'You were here when I got my first car!'" Shirley, who lives in Amelia, is looking forward to catching up on her reading and volunteering now that she has retired. She will be missed, say her colleagues Stefanie Bush and Michelle Fultz. "People love Shirley!" Stefanie said.

It's time for Summer Reading at the Clermont County Public Library. Sign up today to participate and win prizes. Plus there are lots of great activities that emphasize reading and learning this summer:

* Maker Festival, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at the Union Township Branch Library. Learn how to solder, experiment with robots, coding games and circuitry. Use building kits to try engineering challenges designed for makers of all ages.
* Explorer's Clubs offer summer camp fun at the Williamsburg, Batavia and Goshen branch libraries. Bethel is offering the Olympic School this summer for kids.
* Robotics Club, noon Friday, June 24, at the Bethel Branch.
* Yoga master Lilias will visit at 10:45 a.m. Saturday, June 25, at the Milford-Miami Township Branch Library.

PORTMAN STAFF TO HOLD OFFICE HOURS IN COUNTYU.S. Senator Rob Portman's staff will hold office hours in Clermont County from noon-1 p.m. Tuesday, June 7.  During this time, constituents will have the opportunity to share their thoughts and concerns with a district representative who will provide their feedback to the senator. The staff will be at the Clermont County Administration Building, 3rd Floor Conference Room, 101 East Main St., Batavia. No appointments are necessary.

ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS: Clermont Senior Services is urging the community to observe World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15. The purpose of WEAAD is to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect. Participants are encouraged to wear purple on June 15 and upload photos to the Clermont Senior Services Facebook page using #WEAAD2016.

EASTERN CORRIDOR SURVEY: ODOT welcomes your participation in a survey regarding Eastern Corridor Segments II/III (Red Bank to I-275/SR 32 Interchange). The area affects those who live, work and commute through the western part of Clermont County and eastern part of Hamilton County. ODOT is seeking community input about transportation priorities and improvements people would like to see made. The survey, which closes June 15, can be found here.
