Opiate Task Force to present findings May 26
Learn what is being done to fight heroin in county and how you can help

Heroin and prescription drug abuse is rising in Clermont County, and is affecting the health and well-being of our residents, their families and our community. It is putting additional stress on our social safety net, law enforcement and the courts. Families are being destroyed by this scourge. Dr. Brian Treon, Clermont County's coroner, recently released his 2014 report showing a surge in accidental deaths attributed to the increased use of heroin in Clerlmont County.

Please join the Clermont County Opiate Task Force from 6-8:30 p.m. May 26 at the UC Clermont College Student Activities Center to learn of our county's response to this epidemic and how you can help us and become involved. Speakers will include representatives from the Ohio Attorney General's Office, the Clermont County Sheriff, the Clermont County Coroner, the Union Township Police Chief, the Clermont County Mental Health and Recovery Board, the Clermont County Public Health Department, and members of the recovery community. For more information contact the Clermont County Opiate Task Force at 513-732-5400.
County to be sprayed for gypsy moths
Targeted land is along U.S. 50; two treatments will be used

One hundred and five acres of Clermont County along U.S. 50 in Miami, Union and Batavia townships will be sprayed in May to help prevent a gypsy moth infestation in the county. The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) will use Mimic 2LV, a chemical insecticide that imitates the natural insect molting hormone, which then initiates a lethal molt in the gypsy moth larvae. These treatments are not toxic to humans, pets, birds or fish. A second treatment to disrupt mating will occur in June.

Gypsy moths are invasive insects that defoliate over 300 species of trees and shrubs. In its caterpillar stage, the moth feeds on the leaves of trees and shrubs and is especially fond of oak. In Ohio, 51 counties are currently under gypsy moth quarantine regulations. The presence of gypsy moths was detected in Clermont County in the last year, although it is considered isolated.

"Similar treatments have been very effective in knocking back these isolated gypsy moth populations in other parts of the state," the ODA said.

You can find the Clermont County treatment map here. Daily updates on treatment progress across the state are available by calling 614-387-0907 or 1-800-282-1955, ext. 37, any time after 5 p.m.

Proud elected to 25th term at OVRDC
He has chaired the commission since 1991

Congratulations to Commissioner Bob Proud, who in March was re-elected to his 25th consecutive term as chairman of the Ohio Valley Regional Development Commission. Proud was first elected chairman in March 1991, and has been re-elected annually since then. "The reason Bob has continued to get elected as Chairman of OVRDC is the fact that he is a fair individual and has never let politics enter any decision that was made by the Executive Committee over the past 25 years," said John Hemmings, Executive Director of the OVRDC.

Covered bridge now open
The Stonelick-Williams Corner Covered Bridge reopened on April 15 with a celebration that included a Model T jaunt across the bridge. Restoration of the bridge cost approximately $900,000 and was primarily paid for through grants. The bridge, built in 1878 and the county's only working covered bridge, now can carry loads of up to 8 tons. Congratulations to the Engineer's Office, which supervised the restoration, and the residents of the neighborhood, who now have their bridge back!

ART SHOW: To celebrate the newly restored bridge, the Milford Row House Gallery is inviting professional artists working in all mediums to participate in an art show, "A Local Icon Lives -- The Stonelick Covered Bridge." The show will open with an artists' reception at the gallery on July 18 and run through July 25. All artists must register by May 20 to be eligible to participate. More information can be found on the gallery's website or by emailing the gallery's marketing coordinator, Mary Ward, Mary Ward & Associates, at [email protected].

Have emergency plan for pets
Protect your pet! May 9 is Pet Preparedness Day. Just as you prepare your family and business for emergencies, you must also plan for your pets.

Get a kit of pet supplies. Think of how you would prepare your family. Your pet will also need at least a three-day supply of food, water, and medication ready in the event of emergency.

Make a plan. How will you transport your pets in an emergency? Where can they shelter?

Be prepared. Stay informed about the dangers in your area, and prepare ahead of time.

Some other tips: Develop relationships with neighbors. They may be able to help in an emergency if you are unable to reach home. Also, vaccinate and microchip your pets. Vaccination will help keep them healthy should they need to be sheltered. And in the event that you are separated from your pet, a microchip provides the best hope of being reunited with your furry family member.
