The ceremonial swearing-in of new recruits from Clermont County to the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines proved the high point of the 2015 Salute to Veterans, Troops and Their Families.

The event, organized for many years by Commissioner Bob Proud, was held July 26 at the Clermont County Fair.

Congressman Brad Wenstrup, at left in video, a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserves, did the honors. In his speech, Wenstrup said, "Loyalty, integrity, honor, courage -- these are more than just words, but a way of life. We couldn't be more proud. They are joining the greatest club the country has to offer ... there will be tough times ahead but with that will come some of the proudest moments of your life."

Electrical, gas aggregation on ballot

Clermont County residents may get lower electrical and gas rates if they approve two measures on the Nov. 3 ballot that would permit a governmental aggregation program for electricity and for gas.

Ohio law allows for communities -- counties, townships, cities, etc. -- to form aggregated buying groups to buy electric generation on behalf of their citizens.

Do you have a family communications plan?

Chances are, if disaster strikes, your family might not all be in one place. Creating a family communications plan before an emergency will help to better prepare you and your family.

Tips

-- During an emergency, local phone calls may not go through. Have an out-of-town friend or relative listed that each family member can call to check in.

--Text messages will sometimes be able to go through even when voice calls cannot. Ensure that every member of the family knows how to send a text.

-- Complete an emergency contact card for every member of the family.

More information about family communication plans, including printable emergency contact cards and communication plan templates, are available at Ready.gov.
