LMU and Harvard Team Up to Pay It Forward Jesuit-style

By Peter M. Warren
Assistant Director
Communications & Media Relations

For Sarah Palacios, her week at Harvard University's Latino Leadership Initiative confirmed things she already had taken to heart about being a person for others; things she had learned and lived at Loyola Marymount University.

Palacios and four other LMU students were among the 41 Latino students from six universities who participated last spring in the LLI program at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. The Latino Leadership Initiative, inaugurated in 2010 with seed money from an LMU alumnus and trustee, is designed to develop the next generation of Latino leaders among current college men and women.

"What we learned at Harvard, we had been exposed to at LMU. Of course, LLI validated it at the highest level of power and education. It enhanced it and put color to it. It put a bow on it," said Palacios, a 2013 graduate in political science from LMU.

LMU Honors Karan Singh
Former Ambassador, Kashmir Leader Keynotes Vedanta Conference
June 15 & 16

Karan Singh, a member of India's Parliament and a world-renowned author, scholar, philanthropist and former ambassador to the United States, will receive the Doshi Bridgebuilder Award during a two-day conference on Vedānta and Vedantic philosophy at Loyola Marymount University this weekend.

LMU Professor Christopher Key Chapple  described Singh as deserving of the Bridgebuilder award for numerous reasons, singling out two - his work for the protection of animals and efforts to build bridges for inter-religious understanding.

"Dr. Singh is on the steering committee of Project Tiger, one of the world's great ecological restoration success stories," said Chapple, who teaches theology. "He also has been an active board member of the Temple of Enlightenment in New York City and the Parliament of the World's Religions, first founded in 1893. These organizations have advanced the cause of world peace through interfaith dialogue."
