Easter is Coming; So Why Does It Keep Moving?

Guest column
by Steven Jayson

It's so easy to plan for Christmas, New Year's Day and the Fourth of July; they always come on the same date every year.  This year, Christians around the world will celebrate Easter Sunday on March 31, but, it's not always March 31.  In fact, it can be as early as March 22, or, as late as April 25 - a difference of 35 days.  So, why does the Easter Bunny hop in at different dates every year just to confuse you?  The short answer is:  blame it on the moon.  There is a simple formula to determine when Easter falls on:  It is always the first Sunday after the first full moon (known as the paschal moon) after the vernal equinox.

More moon facts:

Super Moon:  When a full moon is nearest the Earth (perigee) as it makes it's orbit around the Earth - in 2012 it was 221,00 miles from Earth as opposed to the average of 238,000 miles - it appears much larger and brighter than a typical full moon.   Be alert for high Werewolf activity!

Blue Moon:  When there are two full moons in a single month, the second full moon is known as a blue moon; not as rare as it's label might suggest, they occur on average every 33 months, the next one will be in July of 2015.

Warren Moon:  Retired quarterback for the Houston Oilers, Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks, and Kansas City Chiefs.

Harvest Moon:  The first full moon after the autumnal equinox.

Hunters Moon:  The second full moon after the autumnal equinox.

Looney Moon:  Doesn't exist; I just made it up to see if you're paying attention.

The half moon shape under your fingernails is known as lunula, derived from the word lunar.

Everyone Clamoring for Culver City's Mixed-Use Tilden Terrace

Work is wrapping on the mixed-use Tilden Terrace in Culver City, near Overland and Culver, and everyone wants in, apparently. The horizontal project will have 33 units for low- and moderate-income folks when it opens in July--at least 1,000 people snapped up applications for a lottery that decides who lives in the apartments.  The smoke-free, pet-free building, developed as Culver City's "first affordable housing development for large families" by the nonprofit Los Angeles Housing Partnership, has one-bedrooms starting around $600 and three-bedrooms for a little more than $1,000.  More HERE

L.A. Real Estate Rebound! Wild Buying Spree Hits Westside

From the beach to Beverly Hills, a surging stock market and lower prices have inflamed bidding wars, revitalized sales and sparked activity not seen in years.
To get a sense of the state of the high-end housing market on the Westside, consider the fevered recent sale of an  Quincy Jones designed residence in Beverly Hills. The five-bedroom post-and-beam Modernist property hit the market March 7 at $6.499 million. It immediately attracted seven offers and was under contract eight days later at $6.625 million. The deal wrapped up March 20, with architectural property collector and producer Michael LaFetra (Night Train, Kevorkian) acquiring the North Foothill Road residence.  More HERE

An Echo Park Flip Bought For $300k Just Sold For $922k
This Echo Park flip from ReInhabit hit the market less than a month ago asking $849,000. - - the house sold this week for a whopping $922,000.

Startup Takes Crowdfunding to Real Estate
The crowdfunding space is heating up as the Securities and Exchange Commission inches closer to easing up on its stringent investment regulations.
The latest L.A. company to try its hand at crowdfunding is Realty Mogul, which is taking the investment model to real estate.   The company's online platform is free for accredited investors - or people who make an annual salary of $200,000 or have a net worth of at least $1 million.
Realty Mogul partners with real estate companies to find properties that those companies want to list on the site. Investors then pool their money - they must commit at least $5,000 - for a stake in the property.   More HERE

CHOCOLATE DIP MY WHAT??

It's Easter.  And that means Peeps.  Most people have a very strong feeling about Peeps, one way or the other... love 'em or hate 'em.  And a LOT of people like them stale, absolutely true.  Well, I like them chocolate-dipped.  I saw a packaged chocolate-dipped Peep at a posh bakery on Melrose a few years ago, $6 - for ONE!  Oh, heck, no... anybody can chocolate dip their peeps.  And, it actually cuts the sweetness.  I'm not kidding!  Recipe + more HERE
