Arts Integration

In Challenge Classes, students researched the requirements for Olympic medals and viewed past medal designs. Students designed their own Olympic Medals for the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Also, students created a class Olympic A-B-C Book. Each student chose a letter of the alphabet and a word starting with that letter pertaining to the Olympics. They defined the word, wrote a sentence explaining its connection,  and drew an illustration.

Parent's Guide to Renaissance Home Connect

You may now begin using Renaissance Home Connect as a way of monitoring and encouraging your child's progress in Accelerated Reader.  This will provide parents with a snapshot of your child's progress in AR including average percent correct on quizzes, number of points earned, and results on the last quiz.  YOUR CHILD DOES NOT TAKE AR QUIZZES AT HOME.  ALL QUIZZING IS DONE AT SCHOOL.   This is simply a way for you to track your child's progress at home.

How to login:

  1. 1.      Visit the following website  https://hosted155.renlearn.com/89671/homeconnect
  2. 2.     Type in your child's user name and password.  Your child should know this information.  If you have problems, email Mrs. Carmeans klcarmeans@tupeloschools.com or Mrs. Hollingsworth  tshollingsworth@tupeloschools.com

Information about rewards and incentives for the AR Program

Your child will be working to meet (3) important goals in AR for the first nine week period:

Our dates for the first marking period in AR are Oct. 1st - Dec. 7th

1)    Average Percent Correct must be 80% or above.  This means your child must pass quizzes with an average score of 80% or above for all quizzes taken.

2)    Your child must be reading within his/her reading range.  This is assigned by the reading teachers and adjusted as needed.

3)    Your child is given a point goal based on his/her reading level.

Your child will receive an incentive (various food/novelty items) each time the nine week goal is met.  This incentive is provided because some students meet their goals more than once in a nine week period.

We will have a school wide celebration after Dec. 7th.  Your child must meet his/her goal at least once to attend this event.  The event will be announced at a later date.

Self-portraits

Mrs. Harrell's 5th grade class made self-portraits with oil pastels. After reading the book, Chrysanthemum, students were asked to think of traits that made them absolutely perfect. Students then wrote about these traits and designed their self-portrait to reflect these traits. These portraits are now hanging proudly on display in Mrs. Harrell's classroom. It is quite funny that people who walk in can identify the portraits without even looking at the name!

Car Rider Procedures

Earlier this school year, the administrative team was informed that the procedures for the car rider pick-up line were not working effectively. At that point, the administrative team reviewed the procedures and revisited the possibility of increasing the safety and efficiency of the car rider line. The afternoon dismissal procedures are as follows:

  • Upon dismissal, the 5th graders exit the west front entrance, the 4th graders exit the central front entrance, and the 3rd graders exit the east front entrance, each waiting to be picked up by their parents.
  • The 4th and 5th grade parents are asked to remain in the right lane to pick up the students at their designated areas. These parents will continue to travel in the right lane in order to exit the campus.
  • The left lane remains open to allow the 3rd grade parents to travel to the east entrance. When the 3rd grade parents get close to the east entrance, they are allowed to move into the right to pick up students. These parents will also continue to travel in the right lane in order to exit the campus.
  • All carpool riders are dismissed and picked up at the rear of the building.

After the procedures were reviewed, the administrative team along with Officer Hatch and Officer Shumpert began to observe the traffic flow during afternoon dismissal. We observed that the procedures (for the most part) were followed for student pick up. The dismissal time ranged from 15 to 20 minutes for the majority of car riders to be picked up and exit the campus. The students boarded the vehicles on the right side, thereby avoiding any left-lane traffic. This observation lasted for four weeks.

At the completion of the observation, the administrative team concluded that the current procedures were in the best interest of the students' safety and provided the best means for exiting the campus in a timely manner.

5-2-1 Have Fun!

The Healthy Tupelo Task Force along with the Tupelo Public Schools have teamed up to launch the 5-2-1 Have Fun! initiative to encourage physically active, healthy lifestyles among children and families in our community. 5-2-1 Have Fun! is aimed at increasing healthy eating and physical activity among children and adolescents by promoting the message: 5 fruits and vegetables every day; 2 hours or less of screen time (TV and computer) each day; and 1 hour of physical activity each day. Look for the 5-2-1 logo to find great lifestyle messages to share
with your child.

Oct. 1-5, 2012

2- Limit TV and computer use (not related to school) to 2 hours or less a day.

Set family guidelines for age-appropriate shows.

Set limits on the amount of time your child spends in front of a screen.

Make a list of fun activities to do instead of being in front of a screen.

Be a good role model; keep a check on your own TV viewing habits.

Oct. 8-12, 2012

5- Eat 5 or more fruits or vegetables every day.

In such a busy world, mealtimes often revolve around our lifestyles. As a result of this, we miss meals or eat foods that are not the best for our bodies. Did you know that experts have found that kids who eat regularly with their families are more likely to eat fruits, vegetables, and whole grains? So, no matter how busy life may seem, it's important to make family meals a priority.

Oct. 15-19, 2012

1- Participate in 1 hour or more of physical activity daily.

Moving helps your child's brain develop. Everyone in the family needs physical activity for a healthy heart, bones, muscles, and brain. Encourage running, jumping, hopping...any activity that results in a quicker heartbeat, more breathing, and more sweating.
