"Let no man boast himself that he has got through the perils of winter
till at least the seventh of May," -Anthony Trollope
|
The month of May is often associated with new beginnings and growth; spring flowers start to bloom just as graduating college students blossom into the next generation of employees and entrepreneurs. It is a month for launching new projects and broadening horizons. The Chamber is proud to present cutting-edge endeavors this month that will help achieve the Chamber's goals of supporting and growing new and existing business in Hartsville.
New beginnings present new opportunities. New technology fosters growth, and allows businesses to adapt and thrive in every economic climate. Here are a few quick facts presented by the SCORE national office: 97% of consumers look for local products and services online. People aren't just buying from Amazon when they shop on the internet - they would rather buy from you! Unfortunately, 47% of small businesses do not have a website, and of those who do, 95% are not optimized for mobile devices. You can view the full infographic here. The overall message is clear: every business needs a modernized, mobile web presence.
With this in mind, we hope that all you Chamber members will attend the Hartsville Chamber's Mobile App Open House next Wednesday and Thursday. The Chamber is launching an app that will provide Hartsville businesses and non-profits with a searchable listing that will help your customers find you and keep more of Hartsville's online commerce local. The app will connect with social media and allow businesses to advertise special deals, events, and more! This is exactly what your business needs to move forward into the technological horizon.
The new member spotlight this week highlights a firm that definitely knows the value of an app. FME Nuclear Solutions is a fresh face in Hartsville's business community, and one that is very exciting to the Chamber. This tech firm is moving from the Duke Energy Center for Innovation into its own space - a space that will enjoy a ribbon cutting ceremony in under a week's time. Please join the Chamber in welcoming this bold, modern, and locally-owned business.
New businesses, new technology and new opportunities - there is a lot more blooming in Hartsville than just May flowers!

Houston Penny began recognizing a loss of revenue due to FME in the nuclear industry in 2009. Penny explains, "After years of lost revenue due to FME issues, I developed an App to save millions for the nuclear industry." With the new app, maintenance equipment and foreign materials that go into the nuclear reactor are now trackable to ensure it comes back out. The nuclear industry is not the only industry to benefit from FME Nuclear Solutions products. Penny and his team develop apps to help improve safety controls and risk management for any manufacturing industry.
Penny began developing the business in September, 2013, with support and assistance from the Duke Energy Center for Innovation. In as little as four months, FME Nuclear Solutions was open for business and selling product in the nuclear industry. FME Nuclear Solutions is the first graduate of the Duke Energy Center for Innovation, which is a project of the Community Foundation for a Better Hartsville and opened its doors in the summer of 2013. Hartsville is fortunate to be the home of FME Nuclear Solutions and to have the Duke Energy for Innovation providing support, guidance and assistance to local technology businesses and startups.
