Chamber Connection

January 21, 2014
Hartsville is such a giving community. In times of need, individuals and local businesses truly step-up to fill the void. Take for consideration the team that is pulling together the Dancing with the Stars of Darlington County event to raise awareness about domestic and sexual assault and to raise funds for the Pee Dee Coalition, so victims can continue to receive support. Also consider the 32+ volunteers who have already signed up to spend one hour-a-week to mentor a child in one of the four elementary schools receiving the PULSE Program. And then there is Sonoco, a business willing to invest in the well-being of our environment and the conservation of our resources, to protect us and our planet, by adding the Biomass Boiler to their plant operations. We are so fortunate to call Hartsville home!!

As a take-away from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration hosted yesterday by People to People at Kay Branch Missionary Baptist Church , we are blessed and have come a long way, thanks to the efforts of our ancestors and of those who continue to give. And, we do have a long way to go. As Representative Jay Lucas stated, "It's not a day off, it's a day on."

Let's look at the INFRASTRUCTURE needs we have been exploring. Surely, you have noticed that the roads in and around Hartsville could use a little work. And surely, you can recognize the economic impact of poor infrastructure that limits the ability (or desire) of people and product to get in and out of our city, our county, our region and even our state. We can be grateful that we are moving forward. In 2013, the South Carolina business community and its allies successfully advocated for an infrastructure package. In 2013, the House and Senate both included infrastructure funding in their respective budgets. The 2013 infrastructure package approved by the General Assembly was the first significant infrastructure funding increase since 1987.

You may ask, "Why should I care?". Well, of the 416 load restricted bridges in South Carolina, identified by the American Society of Civil Engineers, six (6) are in Darlington County. And among the 884 bridges in South Carolina found to be structurally deficient, fifteen (15) are in Darlington County. We are a pretty small county to have that much need for infrastructure funding. If you are interested in learning more about our state's plan for addressing these needs, we encourage you to read the article, "The Road Map to the Future" published in the November/December issue of South Carolina Business Magazine. Also, see the Road Map created by our legislators by clicking here. It may take a little from all of us, and we can continue giving to the cause by remaining informed and aware.
