How to Become a Persuasive Speaker
(Nugget from Toastmasters)
Unleash Your Passion : You can only inspire others if you yourself are inspired. Being enthusiastic connects you to your audience. Passion is the foundation of an extraordinary presentation.
Tell a Story: To reach a person's head starts with touching their heart. While facts and data are needed to inspire action, stories are what will connect you to your audience.
Teach Something: Reveal new information or present old information in a new, fresh, novel way. You can only inspire when you give people a new way of looking at their world.
Add a Shocking Moment: Grab the audience's attention by delivering what neuroscientists call an "emotional charge". Delivering surprising information makes it more likely your message will be remembered and acted upon.
Use Humor: Don't take yourself (or your topic) too seriously. Humor lowers defenses and makes your audience more receptive to your message. So, give them something to smile about.
Don't Information Overload: Research has shown that
too much information prevents the successful transmission of ideas.
Include Sensory Experiences: Touch more than one of the senses. Visual and auditory props will bring your story to life.
Practice Your Delivery: Being comfortable while delivering a presentation requires practice. Your voice, gestures and body language should all convey the same message.
Be Authentic: Don't try to be something you are not. If the audience thinks you are a phony they will not trust your message. Be open and transparent.
